I found most of the book to be a tedious bore, but that was until I finished it. By the time I got to the cliff hanger end I could not get it out of my mind. Atwood style isn't the typical chronological presentation where everything is laid out for you; it's the exact opposite approach with mystery upon mystery slowly unraveled by traveling between the present and the past. You get an immediate submersion into the world she created and get to live through each moment as the characters do. This story is insightful, terrifying, riveting, and thought-provoking. The writing is beautiful and every aspect is masterfully created and presented. At the end of the story is a moment of epiphany that is well worth the grueling work of getting to it.

Quite the eerie book. Margaret Atwood seems to have a detectable style between this and The Handmaid's Tale.

Snowman, the narrator, is not a nice guy. He only had 2 friends when the world ended and it's because he's a jerk. But, now, he is seriously alone. This does not make him a better person. There are just fewer people for him to be a jerk to. But, I did find myself sympathetic to his loneliness.
And the flash back story of how the world got to this place is engaging. Some of it is frighteningly similar to what is happening hereandnow.
