We've done it kids. We read something for book club that I actually loved (wild cheering)

I knew I would like this bc I love Taylor Jenkins Reid and most especially when they're narrated by Julia Whelan my fav. This took me longer to get into than some of her other books but when we got there WE GOT THERE. I flew through this today (partially because my library loan was about to expire and I knew it would take 6+ weeks to get it back) and while there were definitely a few loose ends that did not get tied up the way I would have liked, for the most part I really really liked. It made me cry multiple times which is usually a good sign! I just love the way TJR writes characters, especially female characters, and this was no exception. I got a clear picture of all of these people in my head and it was really easy to imagine everything. The space stuff was also really cool. I don't always like when books jump back and forth between timelines, but it really worked here. The romance was also SO beautiful, I loved watching their love story blossom and I especially loved Vanessa as a character, I fell in love with her too!!

I do have a few issues with the whole Franny storyline. First of all is it normal for kids to be 10 in 6th grade? Do I just not know how old kids are? But the whole time it seemed like she was way more intellectually advanced than her age which.. admittedly I don't spend time around kids so that could be something, but it just made things seem a bit far-fetched. I guess that could be a way of showing how she was forced to grow up because of her AWFUL MOM!!!!! And speaking of that it's crazy how we're all just like... okay with her sister abandoning her kid???? Like???? I really loved Joan's relationship with her niece but god her sister sucks! You don't just get to give up on someone because they don't fit into your new lifestyle... that really bothered me!

BUT aside from that I really enjoyed it! I'm willing to look past things I didn't like to focus on the things I did, and it was nice to get a
happy ending for LGBT characters
for once in fiction!

I love the way TJR writes and this book didn’t disappoint. The amount of research she does for her work shines through, and she has a magical way of weaving words into characters that are multilayered, complicated, and who feel real.

Every single character in this book felt real and felt like they had some form of character growth. I loved reading about Vanessa and Joan and their relationship- and it made me so thankful we now live in a world where I can kiss my fiancé openly instead of hiding away.

The introduction to the book already had me choked up and there were multiple parts where I cried or sobbed but it still leaves you feeling hopeful and warm somehow. That’s when you know it’s good writing - how an author can completely rip out your heart but leave you tucked into a cosy blanket feeling like everything is okay.

Thank you to Exclusive Books Melrose Arch for the review copy ❤️

another TJR book that i absolutely adored. loved how it alternated between the present day and flashbacks, and it worked particularly well with this book considering the stakes. maybe not my favourite out of all of the TJR books but i still cried through the whole ending and it is definitely one of my top reads of the year.

desperately need a sequel or follow-up book of joan, vanessa, and frances being a happy family PLEASE ms. jenkins reid i'm begging.

There were some parts of this I really did like (the core love story was strong, both Joan and Vanessa were enjoyable and interesting characters, and
I'm eternally weak for a plane/space shuttle set assumed last conversation
), but the Frances/Barbara side-plot never felt all that believable. Frances didn't read like a convincing child to me (especially during the earlier parts of the book) and Barbara felt more like a plot device for Joan to react to than a fully realized character.

I love TJR’s books, and especially how she portrays strong, empowered women. This book had an interesting topic and the way it jumps in time/space (no pun intended) keeps you wanting to read more. While the characters weren’t lovable, they were complex and you wanted to root for them. My only complaint is that the ending felt too rushed and incomplete.
