At about a third of the way into  this, I already knew it was going to get a spot as one of my all time favorites. That is not a decision I make lightly.

I’ve never related to a character more than I relate to Joan Goodwin. This was such a wonderfully relatable portrayal of the lesbian experience. And the human experience. Because that’s all it is, really.

This is a love story, like it says, but I don’t see it as a romance, necessarily. I think the two are different. To see this story as only romance would be unfair. It was about so many kinds of love; romance being one of them, yes, but also the love of found family, of motherhood, in a way, of friendship, of being passionate about your work and making a difference in the world with it, love for the universe, for our earth, for everything and everyone in it that makes it meaningful, and even love for a potential God that makes it all possible. Personally, I’m not always sure where I fall on the theist-atheist scale. But Joan’s definition of God in this story was so beautiful it pushed me a little closer to the theist side. Again, that is not something I take lightly.

This is a story that will stick with me for a long time. It was so so beautifully written. I’ve never really had the desire to annotate a book until now, but there were so many lines and passages I wanted to underline, that I reread over and over again trying to fully appreciate them. Before I was done I already wanted to start it over from the beginning as soon as I was finished. I teared up multiple times, but I sobbed at the ending. Each of the last two pages brought fresh tears. I feel so seen in Joan, I see myself in her. But I also see myself in Vanessa, and Frances, and even Lydia, and everyone else. I see myself in their flaws, and weaknesses and struggles, and all the ugly, hard to deal with parts of being human. And I see myself in the way they strive to make the right decisions even when it’s hard, in the ways they grow and learn, and, especially, the ways they love.

“To look up at the nighttime sky is to become a part of a long line of people throughout human history who looked above at that same set of stars. It is to witness time unfolding.”

Finished this sobbing in my kitchen at 1 in the morning!!!! Such a beautiful love story and I loved all the research and history that went into this as someone who also loves the stars and space. TJR has done it again.
