Of mice and men is set on a farm in California. It definitely isn't my usual type of read but I found the morals of the story very interesting. One thing I noticed is that Steinbeck explores different types of prejudice and discrimination in this book and there is a character for each type. Curley's wife represents sexism, Crooks represents racism, Candy represents ageism and Lennie represents discrimination towards people with mental disablilities. Just to note, there's some vulgar language the other characters say towards these people but I don't think that Steinbeck meant it personally; he just wanted to show the reality of the 1930s.

Stellar book in prose, themes, and characters, but I feel that it suffers from the ableism in the animalistic languages used to describe Lennie. It's a complicated book to rate, because I really love it for the first three things I mentioned, I think it's a really compelling story, but it doesn't seem right to praise it uncritically when its treatment of a character with a mental disability is so jarring.

The story describes the places so they can be vividly pictured, from apple crates to herons, I could almost smell the ranch.
A tragic short story, with slurs, but a good read.
