Dexter's Final Cut

Jeff Lindsay

3.39 AVERAGE

The plot is a bit far fetched but the book still lets us see inside Dear Dexter's mind. The wicked sense of humor is still there. What is missing is the feeling that you want to cheer for Dexter. Dexter seems to break from his character in this book.

I really enjoyed the book, faults and all. It is more like a summer blockbuster movie than the others, it's entertaining if you can just go for a ride.
slow-paced

dexter is a dick. period.

Complete disregard for Dexter's character. Lindsay tries to change Dexter in new ways that are completely unbelievable. Everything about the character is tossed out the window. Additionally, the mystery of the killer at the end is so painfully obvious to the reader that it makes it incredibly agonizing to read 100+ pages of Dexter missing every single clue. When the reader knows "who-dun-it" so easily it makes the character of Dexter seem like an absolute imbecile and doesn't fit with his supposed high intellect.

Basically, Lindsay has proven that he can create an incredible character (Dexter) but have no ability to actually write good stories for that character. It is honestly baffling. Dexter is given a great, memorable personality and character. Sadly, he is never used as effectively as he could be. The first book really set the stage and it has just gone downhill from there.

I always enjoy reading Dexter. It's a little formulaic, but fun nonetheless. This particular book threw me, I thought Dexter was out of character and it was frustrating that he didn't just get to the action instead of day dreaming about his new future. I do appreciate the irony in the end, but won't spoil it.

Holy cow this was so boring. It took forever. It had none of the stuff that makes Dexter books interesting (Dexter as a suspect, Dexter juggling domesticity with murder) & was just an extended fantasy where Jeff Lindsey imagines what it’s like to hook up with a hot starlet. Transparent, predictable, & wildly disappointing.

I’d even pick the weird one where the dark passenger is all supernatural & uncomfortable over this. It’s fuckin terrible

A disappointing novel by Lindsay in my opinion. It felt like the author didn't particularly enjoy writing this book and it showed with this rushed attempt (especially the ending and motive).

There were some usual witty remarks/comments and it did start off really well, but I found it went downhill quickly after that.

Dexter's immaturity, extreme selfishness and obnoxious personality the author suddenly created made this quite awkward to read in parts and made it quite unenjoyable to read. Shame.

I enjoyed this book till about halfway through when it became painfully clear what would happen next. I felt like I had to dredge through 200 more pages for it to happen. Nothing Dexter's character does in the second half of the book makes any sense for his character and the ending was the stupidest thing I've ever read. Did the author just run out of ideas and throw in the towel? I really feel like I wasted my time with this series.

Spoilers. Basic synopsis: Two actors are shadowing Dexter and Deb to get to know their jobs for a TV pilot. Women who look like the actress start turning up dead and Dexter must act as her bodyguard while trying to find the killer.
I have read other reviews that feel that the characterization of Dexter in this book is inconsistent with the other books. While I agree to some extent, I don't feel like the plot suffered because of it. Yes he seemed to think even less of his family than usual.. yes he surprisingly develops a schoolboy crush. In general his relationship with the actress feels out of character. But honestly, I had forgotten things Dexter had said and felt in other books, so I just had a slight inkling while reading that some things were off. What I did like was the pacing of the plot. I felt more engaged than I had in some of the other books. My only real issue is with the ending. It felt incomplete. You can't just end it with him waiting and guessing what will happen! I want to know if it actually happens as he anticipates. I really hope there is another book. I am giving it a higher rating because of how well it kept my interest and despite some remolding of Dexter, he was just as likable and darkly humorous as always.

I fucking KNEW Robert was a pedo. Hats off to me, call me Sherlock Holmes. I'm a bit sad about Rita though :(
