I fucking KNEW Robert was a pedo. Hats off to me, call me Sherlock Holmes. I'm a bit sad about Rita though :(

As always suspenseful and funny, this time with a cliffhanger ending. Can't wait until July!
This book was a little frustrating, because Dexter was so unlike himself in this novel. I disliked that he was so willing to abandon Astor, Cody, and especially Lily Anne. We went from doting dad who wanted to change his murderous ways in the 5th book to I’m ok with seeing her on the weekends in this one. What a jump. And Dexter being obsessed with an actress and fame is a huge stretch. I also didn’t like that there was no mention of Brian in this book, after he’s been prevalent in the last few novels. However, the death of a beloved character and the way things came crashing down at the end makes the ending very powerful and very sad. I do look forward to seeing how the series ends and all I can hope is that the last book is much better than this one.
Some highlights:
“My conscience was clean (most mythical objects are).”
“‘I know,’ I said, which was a lie because I didn’t know.”
“It was an unkind thought, but since no one else could hear it, I didn’t bother to pretend I hadn’t thought it.”
“It was closer to the kind of look you give somebody you caught jay-walking to spit on nuns.”
“I wondered if anyone would notice if I flung her out a window.”
“And she looked so small and vulnerable that I wanted to kill things for her.”
Loved the other books this one fell flat.
Wait... just re-read the final couple of pages to see if I had finished the book.... Was this the last one?

I'm so disappointed...
I was really enjoying this series because thus far it'd managed to take all the fun (sometimes silly), enjoyable parts of the show and leave out all the bad. This is literally only the bad.
Dexter is so out of character the entire book, randomly deciding to care about a woman cause she's pretty? Suddenly cares what Rita looks like (in an absolutely disgusting way), suddenly can't notice clear predators around him, suddenly wants to be on TV despite just one book ago not even wanting to be in a work related interview, suddenly wants to give up his old life that in the last TWO books he was clearly starting to appreciate cause...he wants to be lazy? And drink? despite clearly stating before he drinks to look normal. Absolutely none of these decisions make sense, and it takes all the character development over the series and throws it away for "drama." Obviously Dexter might not care about Rita's feelings, but he cares about his image and looking normal, and he's clearly acted and stated he doesn't think with his dick, so it makes no sense that he suddenly would.
The homophobia is also real and alive - obviously the character Dexter thinks is gay is a pedophile, cause that makes sense /s. The amount of the F slur is too damn high for 2012.
Also, the stalker plot isn't resolved? Like.....did he do it? I assume so, but the stalker is taken out halfway through the book. At least Dexter's finally getting caught, but not even for the right thing. Fingers crossed the next one at least gives some of the old enjoyment.
C - 1, A - 7, W - 6, P - 3, I - 5, L - 2, E - 2

This is going to make for an interesting review…oh boy.
I’ll preface this review by stating that I actually enjoyed the book, like I have all of them. Lindsay really enjoys writing for Dexter and the characters he’s created but, it looks like he’s tired of the Dexter of the previous 6 novels and wants a new direction.
The characterisation here is so at odds with the other books, and it is filled with so many really stupid moments (Debs refuses to be a bodyguard because of her kid, but has no qualms about Dexter doing it, Dexter with 3 kids and a wife), Dexter is stupider than ever (a gripe I’ve had with previous books: he just sort of bumbles along and trips up and gets rescued), and he spends all his time in a hotel having feelings and stuff.
I don’t think the paedophile angle was particularly well handled; it’s as though writing about it made Lindsay uncomfortable, and so what he wrote became uncomfortable and weird while trying not to be. Nothing concrete for this, just a weird feeling I had while reading it.
Some excellent little lines in the book though, and a fun setting but…why such a weird cliffhanger?
The biggest and most egregious sin however, is this: why does a paedophile not have a Dark Passenger?
