This was probably my least favorite of the Dexter books. I wasn’t happy with Dexter himself, as I feel like TV Dexter wouldn’t have done this. I can’t help but comparing these to one of my favorite TV shows. Speaking of that, one of the big things that happens in the show, finally happened in this book. I’ve been waiting for it, but it wasn’t near as dramatic as the show. Also, I pegged the suspect from the beginning!

3.5 stars is my real rating. It was the second worst book in the series. Dexter didn't behave like himself at all. Character growth is fine but the operative word is GROWTH. Not sudden over-5-minutes change.

This one was rough. I really enjoyed book 6, but Dex seemed more unlikable in this one than ever before. The way he talks about Rita in this book is so awful. The final act saved this from being a one star book.
I love the Dexter series! I started reading the books because I watched the show (backwards, I know) and was curious to see how well they adapted the books. So far, the books have been pleasantly different from the show and I've loved both very much! This book though did nothing to impress me. The first half was fine -- kind of dull, but a good representation of Dexter's newish family life. Once he started his relationship with Jackie though, things started to go downhill. From watching the show, I ADORE Rita. Now her character in the book is extremely annoying and I feel like I wouldn't care about Dexter cheating as much if I was able to separate cute Rita from the show from needy and whiny Rita from the books. But the cheating got to me. Then, Astor gets taken by Robert which is an okay plot twist -- until it becomes known that she is going along with his pedophilism because she wants to be famous? She's 11, where does she get this from? I know she's supposed to be dark and twisted because of Paul, but this was a little much. Lastly, I just felt plain annoyed when Rita dies very suddenly. I almost feel like that last detail could have at least been saved until the last book. All in all, love the series but hated this book. I kind of wish I would have skipped it, but I can't get myself to do that in series.
