Finishing this book was a challenge. It was like Jeff Lindsay completely tossed out all of his character development from past stories and said, “you know what, let’s have a complete personality change”.

First off, the thing that bothered me the most about this book is how Dexter completely disregards the kids. He has risked so much in previous books for the kids, they are pretty much the only non-dark passenger thing he cares about and yet now he just completely snubs them and feels like they are an absolutely unnecessary annoyance??

Dexter dreams of Hollywood. That’s the next issue. For 6 books it has been concretely stated that Dexter wants to blend in. He has to stay low key and remain anonymous and wants ZERO attention brought upon himself but now a pair of tits and some really good food change that? Also 1.) how are you going to make a character who has never really shown any sexual prowess suddenly all about adultery and boobs? 2.) when did Dexter become such a gluttonous food snob? I mean food has always been a big thing for him but this book went over the top ridiculous with it.

Also wtf, is up with this sudden issue with Rita being/looking old? Dexter has literally never fixated on her looks before (the idea is that she is pleasant looking and NORMAL). Now he’s all upset and worried that she looks old and not good and does he too and oh no....when did Dexter become such a whiny dick?

This book was 100% written without any thought to previous character development in mind and I guess readers were supposed to just accept how completely off base all of this is because, “hey it’s Dexter”.

The character assassination...

I am disappointed by the Dexter series. I have watched all seasons of the show and thought, well if the show is this good, the books must be even better! I was wrong. In the books, there is nothing lovable or endearing about Deborah. She is bitchy and mean all the time. Whereas in the show, she is tough and swears a lot, but there is a good side to her, kindness and real emotion. Rita in the book is a complete idiot. She is incapable of speaking even one coherent sentence. In the show, she is sweet and gentle and very lovable. I believe it was book two where Dexter realized Cody and Astor were just like him and he vowed to teach them the Harry path. Did that ever happen? NO!! The books probably would have been a lot better if they had actually been instructed. But Dexter was far too self involved. And Lindsay uses the same tired phrases over and over again, in every book. Dexter's magnificent brain, his genius. Honestly, that was ridiculous. He was, from the get go. A complete idiot, missing the simplest conversational clues. Of all seven books, three and seven were the worst. Three was ridiculous because of the whole Moloch crap. That just brought the whole series to a new level of absurdity. And books seven, I mean what the hell? He was so in love with Lily Ann when she was born and all of a sudden Jackie comes along and his daughter goes out the window? That was a thoroughly un-Dexter book. I am so glad I am finished with the series, I hated it after book three. I recommend only reading books one and two, they are the only half way decent ones. Saying this for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE--- The TV show is better than the books!!

CW: homophobia, ableism, derogatory slurs, blood, death, pedophilia, sexual assault mentioned, adultery, sexism

unsure if it's me that's changed in the past few years since I started the series or if the books have just gone downhill as they continue but oof, not great.

I was disappointed with this one. Spoilers ahead.

I started reading the books after I realized the show was based on this series. Thankfully, the show didn’t follow the books very closely (though I could do without the shows ending). I’ve continued through them because I’m the kind of person that once I start a book series I have to finish it because I want to know what happens. This isn’t excellent writing but at least the previous storylines have been interesting. Book Rita is unbearable. Does Jeff know that people don’t only speak in half sentences? I mean seriously she’s never strung together a complete sentence in the entire series! Deborah annoys me in both but I like her better in the show. Cody and Astor have a bigger role in the books and honestly I could do without them. Even annoying preteens aren’t always bitchy. I mean come on. I get that everyone in the book you’re seeing from Dexter’s eyes but still. Every single character only exhibits one personality trait, has Jeff met a real person before? People have multiple emotions!

So now for Dexter’s Final Cut. Honestly I started writing this about 70% through because I was getting so frustrated and had no one to talk to about it. Not only are there pages upon pages of useless food descriptions, but Dexter’s entire persona is completely different in this book. Sure, he always saw Rita as a chore but he cared about Cody and Astor and helping them grow given their unique differences. And Lily Anne, did he just completely forget about his daughter! The one person he truly ever felt anything for.

And now he wants to be in the spotlight when he always has wanted to keep a low profile to disguise his dark habit. It just makes absolutely no sense. He’s ready to whisk off to LA without a second thought. Also, how is it that he can all of a sudden just completely neglect his actual job to become an extra in a movie? I know he was set up as Jackie’s bodyguard but that was done by Deborah when they were trying to keep everything under wraps. Wouldn’t they assign someone more qualified once they found out what was really going on with this killer?

And the storyline with Astor. Dexter is upset not because she’s missing but because someone took her and she belongs to him. That storyline was extremely predictable. Dexter likes to tell himself how smart he is but he always seems to ignore the evidence right in front of him.

Jesus Christ I know I’ve been rambling but I’m so annoyed with this book! And really, a cliffhanger?? I can’t believe I have another one to read too.
