Dexter's Final Cut

3.4 AVERAGE

I was disappointed with this one. Spoilers ahead.

I started reading the books after I realized the show was based on this series. Thankfully, the show didn’t follow the books very closely (though I could do without the shows ending). I’ve continued through them because I’m the kind of person that once I start a book series I have to finish it because I want to know what happens. This isn’t excellent writing but at least the previous storylines have been interesting. Book Rita is unbearable. Does Jeff know that people don’t only speak in half sentences? I mean seriously she’s never strung together a complete sentence in the entire series! Deborah annoys me in both but I like her better in the show. Cody and Astor have a bigger role in the books and honestly I could do without them. Even annoying preteens aren’t always bitchy. I mean come on. I get that everyone in the book you’re seeing from Dexter’s eyes but still. Every single character only exhibits one personality trait, has Jeff met a real person before? People have multiple emotions!

So now for Dexter’s Final Cut. Honestly I started writing this about 70% through because I was getting so frustrated and had no one to talk to about it. Not only are there pages upon pages of useless food descriptions, but Dexter’s entire persona is completely different in this book. Sure, he always saw Rita as a chore but he cared about Cody and Astor and helping them grow given their unique differences. And Lily Anne, did he just completely forget about his daughter! The one person he truly ever felt anything for.

And now he wants to be in the spotlight when he always has wanted to keep a low profile to disguise his dark habit. It just makes absolutely no sense. He’s ready to whisk off to LA without a second thought. Also, how is it that he can all of a sudden just completely neglect his actual job to become an extra in a movie? I know he was set up as Jackie’s bodyguard but that was done by Deborah when they were trying to keep everything under wraps. Wouldn’t they assign someone more qualified once they found out what was really going on with this killer?

And the storyline with Astor. Dexter is upset not because she’s missing but because someone took her and she belongs to him. That storyline was extremely predictable. Dexter likes to tell himself how smart he is but he always seems to ignore the evidence right in front of him.

Jesus Christ I know I’ve been rambling but I’m so annoyed with this book! And really, a cliffhanger?? I can’t believe I have another one to read too.

So far the worst in the series

I can't believe I have one book left in this series. I flew through all of them and now I don't want to read the last one because then it is over :(

Really anxious to see how they end the series! Then on to the show.

Ack!!! Talk about a cliff hanger ending!! Hard to wait for the last one to become available!! To whoever has this checked out- finish already!! I need to know what happens!!

This was hard because I loved the dexter book series but.... Yeah couldn't finish it or get into it. This seemed out of character for dexter.

I got so mad at Dexter in this one! But then it ended with a horribly emotional cliffhanger and I just don't know what to do with myself until I can get my hands on the final book!

Debated for a while whether to give this book three or four stars and in the end I settled on three stars, based on the GoodReads star system meaning "liked it", though I sometimes wish half stars were an option. The first half of the book was boring but when it picked up I feel like it really picked up. I think the ending was satisfying and well deserved.

All that being said, I'm glad this series is over. It was getting to be a bit exhausting reading Rita's dialogue.

‘’Death is the mother of beauty.’’

I know what you are all thinking ‘’Whaaat 3 Dexter books in less than a year and she will also buy book 6 before the end of the year? Is she insane?’’…. 2 more books. Yeet yeet bitch.
I always thought that this was the last book because it was called Final Cut but then Dexter Is Dead came out and I was confused. Yes I finally read the summary and now I get it. I have like 1 braincell okay.

‘’He liked me. He really liked me.’’
“Liked you, liked you?” Magnus buried his grin in the cat’s fur. “Sorry. Are we twelve now?

Same energy?

Dexter’s dumb ass was thinking that boi was gay when it was extremely obvious that he is a pedo. The moment he interacted with the kids I was like ‘pedophile’. Am I supposed to believe that he couldn’t figure it out? To be completely honest, he is braindead in this book.
This should have been Dexter the moment… oh fuck I forgot his name….Robert talked to Ashtor:

Dexter feels a lot of things now… cool I guess. That is the reason why I lowkey hated the show after they introduced Hannah. I’m fine... Fucking Hannah, garbage bitch... I just hope the ending isn’t as bad as the tv show’s.
