Alex Easton returns in this follow-up to What Moves the Dead, one of my top 5-star reads in recent years. I’m a big fan of Kingfisher - they are excellent at building suspense, setting the (gothic) scene, and creating intriguing characters, all of which they did extremely well at in What Feasts at Night. Unfortunately, I felt the book started too slow and didn’t live up to my sky-high expectations coming from the last book. However, once the book picks up, it gets genuinely terrifying - something I feel few books actually do - and I couldn’t wait to see how Alex responded next. There are some images from this book that won’t leave me (🐴🛌), and overall, it was an incredibly entertaining read. I can’t wait to pick up Kingfisher’s next book as soon as it comes out (please be relatively soon 🤞)!

I absolutely loved What Moves the Dead and went into this with real high expectations. This book continues to follow Alex Easton as ka* heads back to kans homeland, Gallacia. There are still very much gothic themes and imagery, but it takes much longer to get an unsettling feeling we got in What Moves the Dead. I do love we got to understand more of the culture of Gallacia and I think the novella did an excellent job at explaining necessary world-building lore. The story itself is fairly slow in the beginning due to the world-building. However, the last 1/3 of the book is amazing and gives you those same creepy feelings you got from the first book. I would recommend reading this if you enjoyed the first one, just know there’s less horror and more mystery

I was about to say it was less terrifying than What Moves the Dead, but I have not yet fallen asleep.

This book was a fun, quick read. It was nice to return to Alex and Angus, but the plot of this book was predictable and it didn’t feel like it added a new twist in the way that the first one did. It goes exactly where you think it is going.

I still recommend reading it, just don’t expect a twist like the first one.
