I first read this book in my teens, and to be honest did not like it all that much. However, now that I have reread it, I found it an engaging read. The short story format worked well, although by the end I was starting to tire of the format, which was usually that three quarters of the story was in Holmses study, and then if the last segment was not it was somwhere else but still an infodump.
However, the character came across as much more interesting than I recall and I think I shall read a full Holmes novel at some point in the near future.

Sherlock and Watson are very sympathetic characters, one instantly gets involved with them.
Yet the plots are quite naive and deductive chains so dubious and arbitrary, though internally claimed to be rigorous and logical. But the worst thing about detectives generally, is that it's interesting only while you're reading it, but loses all attraction once finished. No afterthought usually remains. Which makes detectives pulp fiction to me. The quality of writing and its classical status still make the book appealing.

Watson was a retired military doctor, had served in Afghanistan, still relevant in 2021 :/

The Moriarti episode and the marvelous comeback of Sherlock gave me that endless sequels feeling.
