I was introduced to Jeremy Brett’s brilliant version of Sherlock Holmes several years ago, and quickly decided I wanted to read the books too. Having read the first collection - ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ - I can comfortably say I love the texts as much as the adaptations. My favourite stories were ‘The Red-Headed League’, ‘The Copper Beaches’, ‘The Engineer’s Thumb’, ‘The Beryl Coronet’, and ‘The Speckled Band’ - also probably in that order! Conan-Doyle is a master at creating memorable characters, and each tale is as diverse and vivid as the next. Of course some of the stories are weaker than the others, but they only serve as foils for the mastery of the others. Overall, if you’re a fan of Holmes I recommend both the original books AND Brett’s TV version.

The stories that actually involved Sherlock are great, but several have nothing at all to do with the detective. Those ones felt more like little anecdotes than narratives, which is not really to my taste. A Scandal in Bohemia and also A Case of Identity are my favorites.
