Having seen dozens of films and shorts with Sherlock Holmes, it was fun to read this first collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The writing is good, the descriptions well wrought, and the action well paced. That said I am very interested in reading other Doyle works that are not related to Sherlock Holmes. After about two stories the "mysteries" fall into the pattern of likely culprit to be ignored, next likely is guilty. Holmes sits with heavy lidded eyes, uses keen powers of observation to solve mystery immediately, tells all the parties to meet him the next day when he then reveals the guilty party. By the end I couldn't wait for the collection to be over as the plots were so predictable. Character development outside of the protagonists was difficult as well since the stories jumped from mystery to mystery. By no means a bad book and worth picking up for its classic value, but still lacking in depth that made it hard to get too excited about. Solid three stars.

I'm not much of a tv watcher but in this case I preferred the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series over the original written stories. Doyle relied heavily on dialog to describe what happened, and I felt like this kept me at arms length from getting immersed in the events. Still, it's not boring, there are plenty of clever things going on.

Except for a few oddities with the American accents, the narration was amazing.

Every adventure has an end.

First of all, this is one of the finest liturature. So, there's no reason of it getting less than 5 stars. The stories were adventurous & enlightening. & they quite give a way to imagination. That's the best part.
