I think the coolest thing about reading this is finding how many lines from the movies are actually found within the book! The stories are entertaining, but his logic and observational capability are astounding. I've been trying to do the same, and it's amazing what you can find and deduce...

Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass, cape and hunting hat is unmistakably recognizable as the arch-type of the detective, whether you have read the novels and short stories about him or not. It was a very entertaining first encounter with this Mister Sherlock Holmes for me and I immediately liked the loyal Dr Watson who recounts these peculiar adventures ! He reminded of a friendly Labrador who follows its master everywhere.

I never thought I would think these stories to be so funny! I completely understand now why they must have been so popular as weekly or monthly stories in a magazine! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had quite a talent for coming up with intriguing and creative story lines that fit perfectly in a short narration! It’s also written in a fresh and quick style, no slow dragging in my opinion. I especially liked the short stories in the second half of the book, they had some awesome plot turns!

The only downside might be that the ways that Sherlock Holmes come to his conclusions are sometimes a bit too fantastical to me, for example that he recognizes the mud on a visitor’s shoe to be from a certain part in London. Wow. But then again, it doesn’t bother me that much, since the imagination and unlikely plot twists in the stories is what makes it worth the read if you can see past the surrealism of certain things and the dry manner in which Dr Watson always concludes the short stories.

This edition also has some of the original illustrations, which is a nice addition.

Twelve Sherlock Holmes short stories. We listened to the audiobook on the way to vacation.

I hate giving star ratings to classics, so I'm just going to give my thoughts.

I've read most of the Sherlock Holmes novels, but until now haven't read any of the short stories. Well, apparently I'm just an idiot, because short stories are the format where these stories really thrive. The novels contained ridiculously long excerpts full of barely relevant details (I will NEVER forgive ACD for the evil Mormons plotline in ASiS).

This was fun. I spent a few weeks reading a short story or two before bed and I really enjoyed myself. The standouts (in my opinion):

1. The Red Headed League (literally how does someone come up with this idea hahah it was so funny)
2. The Speckled Band
3. The Man with the Twisted Lip
4. The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
