Such a heartbreakingly beautiful account of the dissolution of a marriage or rather more the aftermath of the dissolution. Told in brief vignettes, often wondering how to tell this story. Smith is a poet and it is so evident in the way she uses metaphor and language. This book gave me the feels.

Honestly the longer this book went on the more stars it started to lose for me. The first half I really enjoyed but then at some point it just seemed like she was wallowing in being a victim. I’m probably being way too harsh here. I also hated being called “reader” and anytime she mentioned something and then said she wouldn’t tell us about it for whatever reason. That was so odd because I hadn’t asked but then felt scolded as if I had asked for her to reveal things she didn’t want to. I dunno- the writing was very pretty at points and I could feel the emotions. I guess maybe if there had been more light or if it wasn’t as long.

I loved this book. It was messy, and real and honest. Maggie Smith is very much processing her divorce in the book. We are on the journey with her. Raging about her betrayals of her husband beyond the initial one that started everything. We are left scratching our heads alongside her. What is wrong with him? The heartbreak for herself, her children and her family as it had always been is visceral. And while we watch her process things and make as much sense of things as she can and figure out how to keep going, we feel stronger too. I can't wait to read her next memoir and be a part of her continuing journey.

Some of these lines resonated deeply with me. And I especially loved the unanswerable questions across the book.

You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith
I am in love with this new memoir by the poet Maggie Smith. Described as memoir in lyrical vignettes...well, who better than a poet to write her story of painful endings and beautiful and surprising new beginnings in words that will touch the soul of any of us.
This book is teacher, a prescription for seeing through new eyes, a roadmap to possibility, reframing, and transforming what life sometimes slams us with. And, a recipe for discovery of something new and beautiful! ❤️

The writing is gorgeous and the author is a very gifted writer. For me, the constant “I’m not going to tell you that” got repetitive and I lost interest.

This is more spoken word poetry than memoir… I listened to the audio and the author narrates her words beautifully… I think of I’d read it, it would have been less impactful and I’d rate it 3 or 3.5 stars.
