Very mythical story line. I've always loved Mulan but this was much less Disney story telling and more hidden tiger crouching dragon. There is a lot of warriors and evil beings fighting, but it's a page turner. Would recommend for 11 and older just because of all the fighting. The message about self worth is good.

Did not feel related to Mulan. It kind of gave the vibes of Alice in Wonderland and I was looking for something with a bit more historical and less fantastic vibe.
3.5 stars
I liked how this story was told in the style of interlocking folk tales. The audiobook narrator did a great job, and Lin's descriptions were beautifully done. I know this was sponsored by Disney, but it didn't necessarily feel like a Disney tale. I was a little surprised that they gave Mulan a sister who was not featured in the original animated Disney version, but apparently she was in the live action remake and I just have zero recollection of her character (and much of the remake for that matter). Even removing Disney from it entirely, it was still an enjoyable story and felt like it could fit in with other Mulan tales and Chinese folklore.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Disney’s Mulan, but I am a huge fan of Asian culture and folklore.
Grace Lin does a wonderful job incorporating both into this novel and remains true to Disney’s Mulan while also painting her in a more relatable light.
I was hesitant to pick this up, but I’m glad now I did. The writing is marvelous. This is definitely one of my favorites of 2021 so far.

4.5; I am always amazed at how Grace Lin brings her stories together. I get so excited every time I get to a story within the story....she is such an amazing author.
Since Mulan is one of my favorite Disney characters, I knew I had to read this book when I saw it. I like how the author used other tales and legends to add to her characters in this interesting story of Mulan before she became a warrior.
“Rise and continue.” This book is magic! A true delight. Thank you again and again Grace Lin. All the best.

What prepared Mulan to be a mighty warrior as she is seen in the many stories about her? Grace Lin has offered an exciting and adventurous tale that shows how Mulan discovered her strengths. It's a book about identity and figuring out the balance of honoring family and yet also being true to one's own needs and dreams.
Mulan knows how a young woman is expected to think and behave according to her mother and others in her community, but she also knows that her instincts and wishes don't always match up with that.
Grace Lin is a storyteller and she is able to include stories within stories again as she did in her Where the Mountain Meets the Moon books. There are often stories to explain the current predicament that Mulan is facing or to explain who it is she must face or beseech. I love this aspect of the book. The author is great at including little clues here and there that can enable the reader to have moments of realization when they can see the connections between characters and stories.
For fans of Grace's earlier works, this book will be a delight. For those unfamiliar with her books, this will be a fun adventure to give Mulan a little back story. I know I'll be purchasing it for my school library.
