This was the first Crichton book I read after the Jurassic Park novels, which was after a few years. It was also the first book I read after years of not reading. In both cases, this was a great choice. It showed me that Micheal Crichton was a great writer when not telling stories about dinosaurs and proved to me that I like reading even when it's not about superheroes and raptors.

The parts of this book that rail against global warming are fascinating stuff and I love how well Crichton defends his points. How much is viable is up in the air for me and I've tried comparing fact to fiction, but the debate is so heated I wouldn't know how to start.

As a thriller, this book has some great moments, especially the car chase along the river as the heroes are attacked by controlled lightning.

A great book with a not so great ending.

I thought this book was amazing. I may be biased coming from an environmental economist perspective, but I believe a wide array of people could enjoy this, and absolutely should read it. I experienced a slew of emotions - good and bad - throughout the course of this book, and I'm pretty sure I'm permanently scarred from one scene... which in my mind further solidifies how great it is. Well done, Crichton.

Read this book after reading Airframe by the same author.

The book is similar in the way it is set up - like a movie. However the storyline is not as good as Airframe. This book focuses on envrionemtnal issues and throughout the book there's quite a number of debates as to whether the world is really getting warmer or colder. I think this book makes you think about the environmental issues around us. As for the story line, I think it's just the main character going to different places to trying to stop some ecoterrorism. Maybe if it was a movie it would be good, but not so much in a book.

overall, an okay read.

this book had a few interesting sections, mainly the action parts, but I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone lol

Certainly weaker narratively than Crichton’s earlier works as his focused shifted much more heavily to the underlying message, but impressive nonetheless with how relevant the message remains almost two decades later, particularly in the context of the myriad one star reviews that largely turned off their critical thinking skills as the book progressed and missed the broader message altogether.

I tore through this 560 page book in five days. It was amazing. It will question everything you think you know and has so much information seamlessly inserted into it. It never felt like a lecture or an essay. I'm left with so many questions and an affirmation of my policy to question everything and everyone, even if they seem to be the "good" guys.

Entertaining book that I read on holiday. Having read other Crichton books I wasn't too disappointed with this one, it certainly kept me entertained and made me think.

I've just read a couple of other reviews on this book and seen that at the very least it has sparked some debate about Global Warming or Climate Change. As an environmental scientist, I found some of the arguments against GW interesting and will have a look at the cited papers and form my own opinion. As with anything the issue of GW/CC is not only scientific but political and financial and as such many of the things mentioned in the book were similar to my opinions. E.g. the celebrities jumping on a campaign band wagon while refusing to give up private jets and all their cars (hilariously accurate). And the scientists having a bias because of who their funders are (sad but true).

Obviously there are inaccuracies in the book from my point of view, but then again it is a FICTION novel so I don't care. Anyone who reads one book and then forms an opinion about an issue is a bit closed minded in my opinion. But as for an entertaining book, this one hit all the right places. Fast-moving, enjoyable and finished within 3 days, what more could you ask for on holiday?

If you are interested in global warming, you might like this book. It is not my favorite of the Chrichton books but the subject matter definitely has relevancy in this day and age.
