Maybe more of a 1.5 - What was made out to be a cool thrilling ghost story was nothing more than a bland, boring mess of a domestic "thriller"

It was a weird book, hard to get into but after about the 25% mark I couldn’t put it down but my overall feeling after finishing it was that it was depressing.

I wish I could give this 0⭐️

I thought this book was good for the most part - the writing, the characters, the setting, the pace - but couldn’t give it more than ⭐️⭐️1/2. I don’t know if i missed it, but I didn’t see the connection between the two deaths that was proposed in the synopsis. I was also expecting some kind of plot twist towards the end. I didn’t actually mind the ending but i feel like this was marketed wrong and it set me up with the wrong expectations. Regardless, i loved the idea of a ghost character retracing how they died and the revealing of the story - but there were many convenient plot devices and it was ultimately pointless! This book could be for people who want to read about abusive relationships but if you were looking for anything vaguely supernatural/mysterious/thriller definitely skip this.

The narrator of Platform Seven is Lisa and because she is a ghost she knows very little of her life before her death on Peterborough station.
This is a slow burner as Lisa, through her memory being rekindled starts to piece together the circumstances leading to her demise.
We realise she is a victim of domestic abuse, both physically and psychologically although Lisa can't see it and makes excuses to herself why it can't be happening.
Again at this stage of the book doughty builds the tension slowly and it is too late when Lisa realises the dangerous predicament she is in.
There are many strands to this book which involve a number of characters and themes and at times I was questioning how relevant to the narrative they were.
Overall the originality of the narrator kept me interested which is the unique selling point of this book.

The premise of this book had very little to do with the story. This was more of an exploration of Lisa's life. While there were a few points where I was gripped, particularly around the 70% mark, the story was slow and predictable.

Overall, my biggest feeling coming out of this book is that it was exhausting to read. It definitely has an audience, but I am not it.

Takes some time to get into, then gets pretty interesting

I was quite doubtful of this book at first, as it's not something that I would usually read. The beginning seemed quite slow, and I was doubtful I would love it, however as the story continued and there were more clues revealed, I found myself hooked. The book deals with suicide and death, as well as love in many different forms and it was so beautiful to see Lousie Doughty pick apart what love means in a persons life. This book does swear quite often (mostly variations of "f*ck"). This book did feel a little bit slow at the beginning and there were moments when I wanted the stories pacing to hurry up, but I enjoyed reading it. I was surprised that I managed to relate to many of the characters, and shocked at how Lousie managed to fill me with emotions in a book set in the present day and a world that actually exists! I'm glad I gave this book a chance.
