A good solid book. I liked the story line and Kate and Maggie. I found much of it depressing to listen to. 1974 and how women were treated, as second class citizens. It takes a very strong woman to decide they want to be a cop when they first started letting women in. A lot of depressing things in the book, but a good story line. Would love to see more books about Kate and Maggie.
I swear I was not going to read any more of Ms. Slaughter's work. I was too emotionally invested in her characters and she would twist the knife (literally in some cases) and damage and destroy some of my favorites. But I can't quit her. Cop Town is fantastic. It's uncomfortable, gritty and real. The challenges of the 70s in police work are fascinating. Once again the characters grab you and are fully realized in just a few pages...and then you begin to worry about them. I was glad to see her publish a stand-alone but by the time I finished reading, I really hope that it will be the beginning of a new series.

This was an unexpectedly fascinating and no-holds-barred look into life as a female cop, and I couldn't get enough.
Karin Slaughter, author of the New York Times bestselling Will Trent novels, is widely acclaimed as “one of the best crime novelists in America” (The Washington Post).
Today, her first stand-alone crime novel was released. It is available on Amazon. Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a preview copy.
Cop Town takes place in 1974 in Atlanta. Tensions are high and it seems that everyone is suspicious of everyone else. There is racial and religious tension. The city is in turmoil.
And someone is executing cops.
Cop Town follows Kate on her first day on the job, which is a terrible day to start as another cop has just been executed. She is partnered with the dead cops surviving partner, then passed off to his sister, Maggie.
Maggie and Kate are central to the investigation and uncovering the murderer. But you also get to know them. Their characters are relatable and real.
Slaughter grabs you from the opening crime scene and drags you through the entire investigation. But she also has you rooting for Kate from the first moment she walks into the squad room.
Cop Town is a fantastic thriller. It is exciting. The side storylines weave seamlessly into the investigation and the characters are well written and real.

Thanks netgalley for a free read in exchange for a review. I loved it, I read a lot of the reviews but this book did it for me. No it wasn't pretty and the writing was superb. I felt like this story catapulted me back to the days of racism against everything that wasn't a white male, a time where things were so rapidly changing that people just went nuts. I was glued to this book for two days....which is a long time since I can read fast. The world building made me feel like I was there! I would really like a second story about Kate and Maggie, I feel like they're could be. Overall entertainment at its best. Five stars.
It's 1974, and Atlanta is targeted by a serial cop killer. The fear is in the street, all the cops, men, women, black and white people must fight together against this brutal enemy. But not all of them are willing to fraternize with people not being white men.
Jimmy Lawson with his partner dead, hides some important things about the case.
Maggie Lawson, Jimmy's sister, a cop detective trying to solve the mystery without the help of her police partners.
Kate Murphy, her first day in the force, suffering the mocks from all the officers, and with her own ghosts.
All of them must share their secrets if they want to stay alive.
The case will be solved at the end of the book, but I hope we will know more about their lives after this case.
If you have read any of the Karin Slaughter's books, you know that you love the book not just for the plot but for the characters. This time, she shows you how was Atlanta district's police in 1970; with homophobia, racism and misogyny.
This is not a book to just read, you must read it, think about your feelings while you read it and share it. Because after reading the book, you will not be able to keep it to your self.

It started off pretty slow for me. (I listened to this book.) The author took a lot of time to explain several details about uniforms and gun parts. It started to get a little redundant, but towards the end of the book I understood why. I thought the main character’s arc was pretty huge and fascinating for just a week’s time, but she (Kate) did go through a LOT within that week. I sometimes had to remind myself that this book was based in the 70’s. It’s funny how our minds automatically assume cell phones and internet always exist. I loved the twists and turns and I loved being inside the head of the ‘bad guy.’
