I read this w my book club. It was powerful!! I thought you might like it. It’s long though but lots of good info on intersecting of race/mental health
A tough, but important read. The author did an impactful job of revealing the scale and scope of the issues at the asylum as each chapter progressed. It feels unbelievable, but the book is so well documented and grounded in fact. I especially appreciated the information about Elsie and Henrietta Lacks - it was eye-opening to connect the timing of this book with the events from the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

“The rest of us, have to decide if we are open to listening, or if we are going to continue burying our heads deeper and deeper into the sand. The crisis of mental illness, housing, insecurity, and income inequality bear down on all of us.”
There is so much harm that we’ve never reckoned with. This book, which dives deep into one mental health facility for Black patients in Annapolis, Maryland, is meticulously researched and presented clearly. Some of the stories are so horrific I had to pause. There were a lot of names which was sometimes confusing, but it is both an indictment of the way we treat mental health generally in this country as well as a key work of historical scholarship.

Important topic. It starts strong but loses steam in the last section. At times the narrative from the oral histories were hard to follow because they jumped around in time.
