An eye-opening read, this addresses several aspects of the human condition that most of the older generations just want to sweep under the rug. I appreciate the research the author put into writing such a thorough history of mental health in the Black Community as well as the Crownsville institution and its local community. This is a challenging read, but worth it!

I must say that it is a shame on the education system that after growing up on the eastern shore of Maryland, I learned the most of its racial and Black history from this book in my mid-twenties.

Other than that disappointment, this is a detailed history of Crownsville, a small town located outside of Annapolis which houses the only mental health facility for Black Marylanders for decades. I appreciated that the author felt comfortable enough to share her family’s history and stories of mental health and to interview so many of the workers or patients of Crownsville. This is such an informative book and I would recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the subject.
