I have next to nothing of note to say about this book. It definitely enriches a long history of racism in America and I'm glad I read it. It was informational and eye opening, however sometimes I felt it was slow.

Listened to this. Interesting but nothing in this nature ever seems to shock me anymore... shake my head, roll my eyes, etc, but not shock. Great historical info, definitely learned something about Maryland and USAs past.

Hylton’s book shed light on an unfamiliar topic and unknown biases; the patient and employee stories drove home the systemic racism, mental illness, and the fight to provide care for them. Fundamentally changed the way that I  perceive and understand mental illness.

just a brilliant mix of personal narrative and historical reflection. really really important interrogation of an archive that so many have found slippery or otherwise totally (intentionally) obscured.
