It feels weird to rate this book since it is a story of real life and history that's not my own. But I enjoyed learning and listening to the history of Crownsville. I think the author did a wonderful job of explaining the history with the limited resources available.

You can tell that this book was written with time and care. It's deeply evocative without sensationalism. Humanized these stories. Well researched and comprehensive. It takes great lengths to provide cultural context. It's deeply personal for the author.

I feel better for having read this. It's an important and forgotten part of African American history. Beautiful, harrowing, frankly powerful stuff.

I think I was expecting something slightly different in terms of an analysis of mental health and policy.

Such an important history. Appreciated the tie-in with the Lacks family.

A mix of memoir and informational non-nonfiction. Blending the author’s experience of having family members who have mental health conditions and chronicling the history of the Crownsville Hospital asylum. Through exposing the history of the asylum and centering the Black patients and staff in the narrative, the author examines how race (racism), mental health, and “crime” intersect.
