The story telling, using both historical documents and the stories of real people, gave greater scope and focus to a challenging (and still in progress) crisis of mental health in America. I couldn't put this book down because it was so interesting and emotional.

A definite must-read for anyone interested in psychology, anyone who’s looking to be a professional in psychology as well as.. The author does an absolute amazing job at weaving patients stories with educational information.

t’s crazy to think that I while I both studied psychology and suffer from mental illness myself, i never noticed that colored people and minorities were largely forgotten from my textbooks. This book was an amazing eye opener to the horrible tragedies that arises from a lack of knowledge, empathy and the fundamental lack of understanding that comes from the different experiences black people face when it comes to their experiences and the lack of connection from mental health professionals that don’t look like them and therefore can’t bridge their experiences to whatever symptoms they might be showing.

A deeply human and moving look at the history of one asylum in the state of Maryland, but also at the complication relationship between mental health care and the Black community in the USA. This made me cry many many times while I was listening to the audiobook. Hylton is an incredibly gifted storyteller, researcher, and historian, and the absolute scale of the work she did to put this book together is astounding.
