Freida McFadden knows how to build tension in all the right ways. The story is twisty, fast-paced, and makes you question everything, and how well do you really know the people you work with?
Dawn is such an eerie and interesting character, awkward, methodical, and just… off in a way that keeps you constantly uneasy. The dual perspectives between her and Natalie are sharp and work really well to keep you second-guessing. That sense of unreliability is where McFadden shines.
That said, parts of the plot do feel a little over-the-top by the end. If you’re expecting something grounded and realistic, this isn’t that. But if you’re here for the drama and a few gasp-out-loud moments, it delivers.
It’s not my favorite Freida book, but it’s still a solid psychological thriller with a fresh spin on the toxic workplace trope.

“oh you like turtles? i like turtles too. what’s happening here? ~~”
hmmm, it was okay. the emails were so long and boring, and the only reason this book was a fast read is because i skimmed through them (the emails). also, i just couldn’t get behind dawn’s constant obsession with turtles — it was distracting more than anything. as for the plot twist, i wouldn’t call it good — it just felt plain to me. but still twisting at some point. i finished this book in about 8 hours, which felt quite slow compared to the teacher, which i read in 5 hours.

this is my 4th freida mcfadden book, and at this point i know i’m not the audience she’s writing for. the insane amount of times turtles were mentioned in this book? ridiculous. there are 62 chapters and i swear turtles were brought up in like 65 of them 😭.
the only thing that kept this from being a 1-star was the actual plot twist with dawn’s disappearance — that part gagged me. everything else? i could’ve done without.
