2.5 stars. I think I am getting burnt from this series. And having to deal with B's father again did not help. How can she love a man so much that she knows is cruel, beyond racist, and even beat her and her mom?! It is such a messed up relationship. Between that and what she goes through in this my stomach was churning in all the wrong ways. It was the zombies that sicked me. Humans can be terrible!

As creepy and timely as ever. Hope, redemption, loyalty all come into play.

This was an intriguing read. This is my favourite book of the series. I thought it was really good. I was happy that B got some revenge. Also, I loved the bravery that Vinyl showed during that situation. I can't believe he let B do that. I think it just shows how much their friendship means to him. Love it. Also, I thought B's dad was a great character to learn more about. He showed who he really was near the end, and it is clear that he is a better person. I was shocked by the moment between Dan and B. No thank you. However, the reason this is my favourite book in the series is because of that ending. I need Book 10 to see what happens to B next. Overall, a great read.

Dropped this series for a bit waiting while for the next book to be written and it kind of got shuffled to the bottom of my 'to read' pile. Glad I was reminded and picked it back up. Thoroughly enjoyable.
fast-paced

I liked the closure we received between B and her father this book. He’s a bigot and abuser in the most overt sense, yet also displays occasions where he cares for his family and has some tough conversations with B. I appreciate how Shan can write objectively morally depraved people that you actively root against and still make them a compelling part of the story.

The fatal flaw with Todd Smith is that he is not only obstinate in his views of the world being the right one, he also sees the failures of humanity as inevitable. Beating his wife and daughter while saying he loves them, murdering POC because he hardly sees them as people, that’s just the product of a tough world. He claims no agency in his beliefs and actions, only chalking it up to how things must be. He’s a great contrast to B, who throughout the books has tried her best to help in even the most minuscule of circumstances after living under her father’s selfish, ignorant beliefs.

Also, this book deserves four stars just on the basis that Dan-Dan finally died here. His death was not entirely satisfactory, since I don’t think that’s possible with a villain like him, but it was another great character moment for B with how she handled the children he abused. The irony of these zombies having more empathy towards humans than the other human characters is probably part of the point Shan is driving home.

The darkest book of the series yet. Uncomfortable to read at times but kept me on the edge of my seat making me read it one sitting. 5 stars!

A bit much on the torture porn for my tastes, but I'm too invested in B's story at this point. XD
