Would this have creeped me out as a kid? Well it's a middle grade possession story, Korean exorcism and all! Genuinely quite intriguing and lowkey kind of scary as well. Loads better than The October Witches, so I'm glad I swiftly dnf'ed that one and moved on. This was interesting from the get-go and was fairly tense throughout. As always, we have a dopey-ish parent who doesn't want to see what's going on in front of their eyes and the other is just...trying, so I can't blame him. I'm interested to see where this story goes because this first installment was a hit.

If you like ghost stories, this is the book for you! I would recommend not listening to this as the reader had a voice that was challenging to listen to!

Middle grade horror book. Slow to start, and a bit gruesome in Harper’s memories of her time away. The story does pick up and the last third was a great adventure. Curious to see what the sequel has for Harper and her friends.

Dang, this was creepy! Loved the cultural aspects, and despite the straight-forward creepy child trope, there were still a few slight twists.

I listened to the audiobook read by Amielynn Abellera
I do want to say that I found the narration a little annoying, especially Kelly's voice.
Besides that though, this was a decent book. A lot happened it in though to the point that it felt squished and I wish that either there was a little less going on or the book was longer. With that, this book is definitely the first one in a series and it felt almost completely like set-up for the rest of the series, which was slightly frustrating to me from a structural point of view.
The diversity was nice though and I really enjoyed Dayo as a character - I just wish she was more involved in the plot, but I assume she will become very important in the following books.
I might recommend this to my step-brother and maybe (hard maybe) read the next one in the series at some point.
