I find myself torn over a lot of the Wallander books, not entirely used to the sobering writing style and matter-of-fact sentence structure when considering emotional or mental imbalances or issues. This instalment deals a lot with both, wound together through seemingly unrelated cases that are stitched together through some brilliant prose and police work. Wallander is one of my favourite detectives, if only for the humanity and doubt he brings to the job. His relationships with his child, his fellow force members, and his father are all ones I can relate to in some way, and finishing each of his books leaves me feeling fulfilled and a little unsatisfied- wanting to know more of Wallander's story.

These books are so consistently compelling and dense. I enjoyed this story as much as the others in the series. I liked Wallander as a leader. That was a nice addition.

Sweish crime, detective Wallander. Serial killer forces Wallander to look for unlikely connection amongst victims - one of whom is a young woman who sets herself on fire in the middle of a field. Grisly and gripping.
Mankell has a way of presenting some of the world problems from a non american viewpoint using a flawed but very human man as his voice.
more foreign northern mystery, with dour inspectors, horrific crimes, twists, turns, pathos, and just enough humor to keep it human.
not a bad introduction to Henning Mankell, but I will probably switch to Kenneth Branaghs tv series for more.
