Suspenseful psychological thriller. The killer is someone to sympathize with, but his deranged recipe for trying to achieve an admirable goal is indeed insane. Still it would have been great if it worked, especially since his victims are hardly people eligible for any nobel-human-being prize. In the second half his choice of victims starts to stray a little off, which jacks up the suspense.
I could have done without the side love story, but I guess the author needs that to keep some strands running through this series.
It's not literature and sometimes the dialogue is laughable:

"I hope you won't put all your eggs in one basket too early," he said.
"I'm not closing any doors," said Wallander. "But I have to explore every avenue I find."

Nevertheless, good fast-moving thriller that I read in grocery store lines and walking to the bus stop. A good "escape-your-own-life" book.

A real page-turner. Even though the identity of the murderer is clear to readers part way through the book, I felt a lot of suspense while Wallander attempted to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

This was a very compelling read. A big cast of characters, and an amount of violence. Wallender leads a hectic life.

The plus point of the book was the way in which the investigation was described. Luck played only a small part in solving the case, which is normally not the case with many such thrillers. The sensationalism of the novel may have waned a bit now compared to when the novel was originally published. Unfortunately, perversions of human nature are more visible these days.
It is a good book to pass the time and an engaging read throughout.

Although I managed to lose the thread of the complicated relationships of the many bad guys (other than the murderer) before the end, I still thought this was one of the better efforts in the series.

I love the mundane elements woven into the plot. Wallander is so busy with the multiple murders that he can't manage to do his laundry or have his car inspected. Worst of all, he might have to cancel his scheduled vacation, although he can't bring himself to tell the woman who's supposed to go with him. Never mind chasing a serial killer-- ticking off your girlfriend is really living dangerously.
