'For two years following the death of her beloved husband, Eugenia, the Dowager Duchess of Kendal has grieved and kept to herself. Her cousin is hosting a house party and has persuaded Genie to attend—it’s the perfect opportunity to emerge from mourning. Genie is looking forward to seeing old friends but is shocked when she learns the true purpose of the occasion: to match widowed ladies with widowed and unmarried gentlemen.

Once infatuated with a young Eugenia Aldwick, Edmund Holt, Earl of Satterfield is thrilled when Genie arrives at the matchmaking house party. Mutual attraction sparks between them immediately, however he is in need of a wife who can provide an heir and she is unable to do so. Genie would also dearly love to be a mother after losing her daughter several years before. Can they embrace a second chance at love or will the demands of his title and the pull of her maternal heart prove too strong to ignore?'

The Bachelor Earl is a prequel novella to Darcy Burke's The Untouchables series and tells the lovely story of two important characters in the first novel of the series who worked to bring together Eleanor and Titus.

I was especially excited to read this prequel novella to The Untouchables series because I simply adored Lady Satterfield while reading The Forbidden Duke.

I was glad to see that Eugenie and Edmund were older. So many historical romances are about a young debutante still under the shadow of their mother and so it was lovely to read about Eugenie, who had already been wed and widowed, has a grown step-son and is independently wealthy. She has no need to wed and plans not to marry again, out of affection and loyalty to her late hudband.

Edmund was attracted to Eugenie before she made a match with her husband and lost his chance. So when he sees her attending this match-making house party, he sees he has a second chance, only to quickly reallize that she is not aware of the purpose of this party. But with weather impeding any chance of her leaving, they may just get their chance anyway.

The Bachelor Earl is the perfect prequel to The Untouchables series and I enjoyed it. If you're  fan of the Untouchables series, you should read this prequel.

This was an enjoyable novella. The characters had depth. The romance had some spice but overall the characters themselves took center stage.

It's a nice change to see a romance where the hero and heroine are a couple in their forties. The author does a lovely job of expressing the poignancy of a widow returning to society after losing a beloved husband. For example, when Genie meets a gentleman at the house party she's attending, she thinks to herself:

He looked to be the same age as Genie, with some gray streaking his dark hair. He was attractive in a distinguished, mature way. What did that even mean? It meant she hadn't considered anyone attractive since she'd met Jerome almost twenty years ago.

This deftly written book has all the things I love in Regency romance, yet the older couple provides welcome variety.

I received a NetGalley ARC, and this is my honest review.

The Bachelor Earl is the prequel to The Untouchable series and a great introduction to the series. It was short but beautifully written and an attention grabber. It was wonderful seeing Eugenia “Genie” and Edmund’s courtship after meeting them in previous books. For years Edmund had admired Genie and thought he would never have a chance with her so when he had a second chance, he had to act on it. They make the perfect couple, and I was so excited to finally get a chance to read their story.
I received an ARC and am willingly leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the story of how Genie (the mama bear for most of the ladies in this series) and Edmund met at a naughty house party, which was a fun concept.
Genie has been in deep mourning for the last 2 years following the loss of her first husband when her cousin tricks her into coming to a matchmaking house party.
Edmund has been infatuated with her for 20 years but never thought he'd have a chance with her. Serendipity seems to be giving him a second try, he only has to convince her that she can marry for love twice in one lifetime.
There are 5 epilogues in this book, most of which focus on the characters from the first half of the series, I was happy to see them all again.
The epilogues almost all happen at Xmas which is apropos as it's next week :)

Even though this book is a prequel, I'd recommend reading it last so you know who all the characters are.

This is the prequel to Darcy’s Untouchables series and takes you back to a house party where the Duke of Kendal’s (the first Untouchable) stepmother found a second chance at love. I’m a big fan of second chance at love stories and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Genie and Edmund’s story was years in the making and everything brought them together at the perfect time. The scandalous house party allows everyone to be open and free to discover if they have a connection. I loved how scandalous it was especially the scene at the barn. I was holding my breath when she left the party and with events that followed.

Genie made a promise to her husband that she’d try to find happiness again, but she doesn’t think she’ll ever find that same happiness again. She pulled at my heart with the internal battle she had over being attracted to Edmund and then telling him her story. I loved seeing her go from kinda shy to a firecracker with him.

Edmund is a hopeless romantic that wants a love match and his heart has wanted Genie for years. There was no doubting his love for her even from the start because he only had eyes for her. He wasn’t going to let her go and didn’t care about duty. I loved him from the start because he would do anything for her.
