I don't know why I torture myself reading Jane Austen's incomplete works just because I'm hungry for more. Lovely beginning with plenty of promise and that Austen charm I love so much. But it's just that, a beginning!! I find this hard to rate because it is so short and unfinished, I enjoyed what I read but am left very frustrated at it ending so abruptly.

I really enjoyed this but it feels unfair to rate something that was unfinished. (I really hate not knowing how it ends!)

okay this is austen's worst. i have no idea what she was intending this to become. it is not finished and it is roughly 50 pages. i read it all in one sitting and was just so bored with it all. i just want to know her intentions here and ask because just why.

Consigliato, ovviamente.

I give this 3.5 stars. This book is in 2 parts, the first is The Watsons, a portion of a story by Jane Austen. I really enjoyed this and had ideas of where the story might go. The 2nd part picks up where Jane Austen left off and is called Emma Watson by Joan Aiken. I liked this as a standalone story but to me it did not feel like a continuation of the Jane Austen story. Same characters and same setting, but the story felt different and seemed to veer off in many ways that I thought Jane Austen may not have intended it. Joan Aiken also put a more modern spin on the details than Jane Austen would have done.

Enjoyable read. Coates does include the text Austen left behind, although he edits it quite a bit, inserting bits he needs to reshape the characters to suit his version of the story (and cutting out parts as well). Because of this the jarring moment when Coates completely takes over for Austen is less disruptive.

My main complaint about this book is that Emily's relationship with Lord Osbourne is thoroughly fleshed out, while she is barely on speaking terms with Mr. Howard for the first 2/3rds of the book. Seeing her suddenly end up with Howard in this book was difficult for me.

Penelope's character sparkles, which was unexpected, given the poor review Penelope receives by Elizabeth in Austen's original fragment. She's really quite funny. Perhaps she is overdrawn, given that Emily is supposed to be the main character, but I enjoyed her.
