"Hope was such a viciously miserable thing sometimes."
I liked this less than the first book, I just wasn't as invested in the relationship. The banter was funny, but I thought they switched from enemies to friends way too quickly, even Jackson's behaviour towards Jamie changed too fast, while I would've liked something more gradual. I also found the whole marriage deal a bit weird and convoluted.
I did like how obsessed he was with her, and some of the angsty moments were enjoyable.

Such a fun book. Jackson is unhinged. Jamie matches his freak. It just works. I think I liked this better than the first because the FMC was way more relatable to me.

This book singlehandedly pulled me out of a reading slump! π I had never heard of the title or author, but I was perusing the r/RomanceBooks subreddit and came across this as a recommendation under an ISO trope post. SO glad I spontaneously decided to download it from KU and dive in, because once I started reading, I didn't stop until I was finished!
The premise is fun and unique. Matchmaking for elite clients, a failed "undercover" date, an Immersive (AKA forced proximity) program where our FMC observes and coaches our billionaire MMC on all things romance... it was just plain fun! There's also a great cast of supporting characters (namely, his staff which are more like family, Minerva, and Toebeans the perpetually pissed-off pussycat). There's lavish dates and banter for days if you fancy that kind of thing. Though Failure to Match clocks in at a little over 400 pages, it truly did not feel like it!
Look, I'll be real. I read a LOT of romance, the vast majority of which is spicy romance. I'm no stranger to pretty much any type of sex scene you could have on offer. But for real:
me π€ chapter 24
Everything about how that scene was written absolutely hit with me. I was positively titillated, and the extent to which I was enthralled reading that chapter is a pretty rare experience for me, honestly. (#jaded) All of their spicy time had a great/approachable kink level, and they definitely had lust and chemistry in droves, and I liked that it wasn't straight away.
Admittedly, I wasn't too sure about Jackson at first. He was pretty rough around the edges and his wealth seemed pretty flashy (even for billionaire romance). The verbal sparring matches back and forth between he and Jamie were entertaining, and I knew we'd learn more about him and/or he'd soften up over time, but I was pleasantly surprised by him and who he turned out to be at his core. I don't want to say too much at the risk of spoilers, but his character has a huge amount of depth and I appreciated how it was integrated into the plot with reveals happening slowly but surely. The scene in the library where he showed her his burn scars shaped in the letter D? Not only did my jaw drop at the unexpected twist/callback to the tarot reading, but my heart ached for him. If you love the escapism of a man with more money than god spoiling the ever loving crap out of his love interest, you'll love this book. I know I did. β‘Μ
That said, I wish Jamie got as detailed of backstory and development as Jackson got. We know she's a believer in love, especially after seeing her parents and best friend experience that kind of love, and her career as a matchmaker is super important to her as a result. But other than knowing she lived with her best friend for a decade prior to her departure to live with her husband, not a ton is said about her backstory. Granted, I didn't read Ria & Adrien's book, so maybe more of her backstory was discussed there that I just don't know about here. But contained to her own book, I wanted to know more about her outside of this Immersive bubble she was in with Jackson.
Overall, this is a great read if you're in the mood for something fun from KU. No third act breakup, deliciously spicy scenes after somewhat of a slow-burn beginning, ethical billionaire escapism, forced proximity... Failure to Match ticks all the boxes, and I loved every second of it!
