Having never read this growing up, it was about time to read all about a classic children's mystery book. When sixteen strangers come together to the reading of Sam Westing's will, they realize that their shared connection is much deeper than any of them thought. And in classic eccentric old man format, they're left with a puzzle to figure out what or who killed him, and the prize is a vast fortune. Who wouldn't jump at the chance? With a diverse cast all with different motives, it's a fun and cozy mystery that'll have you questioning just who to trust.

While there may be a lot of characters and some of them felt a bit underdeveloped, that's besides the point. Everyone is charming in their own way, and all contribute to the overall narrative that makes this so intriguing. I think if 10-year-old me had read this way back when, I definitely would have really enjoyed it. Still, it's just as fun for adults with a bit of whimsy thrown in that you can't help but adore.

i got all smug when i thought i had figured out a “big” piece of it on page 61 and, while i sorta had, there were also like a dozen more mysteries after that which i either couldn’t guess or was completely wrong about. v cute and good and fun
fast-paced

It's odd. It's not my favorite book, but every couple of years I reread it. It's the only book I care about forgetting. When I can't quite recall the story then I get the urge to reread it.
