His strength...Gerald is survivor.

I can never understand how someone is so sick that they would abuse a child...I'm happy that he had the ending he deserved.

This book really spoke to me about struggle and hardship and the ability to rise above. This is a book everyone should read.

Um..this book was something else. I feel really bad for Gerald & Angel because all of the stuff they went through as kids..it’s like ??? And I don’t mean the book was something else in a bad way, it’s just like so much happened and it made me kinda sad because no child deserves to go through what they went through. I liked how the author wrote it as a realistic situation, but I really didn’t like the third person pov. Overall, it was a good book. I was satisfied with the ending.

Gerald grows up with his aunt until he is nine, and has to move back with his mother and little sister Angel. Gerald's stepfather Jordan is abusive and beats Gerald. Eventually Angel admits to Gerald that Jordan has been touching her, and Gerald has to decide if he will turn Jordan in or not.

I can imagine why this book is interesting to students. It is on an accessible reading level (780 Lexile), and moves from event to event very quickly. For me personally, I have a hard time reading about abuse; it makes me angry and depressed. Seriously, people should have to get a license before they reproduce.

These books, to me, feel oversimplified and shallow.

However, these books also somehow manage to make suicide, drunk driving, sexual molestation, drug abuse, and rape school appropriate...FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL CHILDREN.

I don't even care that I think these books could use more character development, more nuanced conflicts, and less melodrama. All I care about is the fact that I have a remediation class of fifteen kids who ALL hate reading, and who all have become OBSESSED with these books, to the point that a bunch of them specifically asked to have Forged by Fire to read AFTER taking a three hour long state READING exam.

I got them Darkness Before the Dawn today and a group of them split off to read while I reviewed with the others. The reading group read in pairs for an entire hour and then groaned in disappointment when afternoon announcements came on. These books are like gold.

Now don't turn up your nose at this young adult lit book, it is great! I read this book every year with my freshmen and they love it, even the ones who hate to read. I like to call this the Lifetime book. It has everything you would see in a Lifetime movie: sexual abuse, drug abuse, physical abuse and yet the ability to overcome.

DNF 43/142. This is just here to hurt me and I don’t feel like being hurt today.
