This book is nontraditional in format, presented not as a cohesive prose narrative, but instead as a collection of fictional interviews with various people all over the world that collectively serve to narrate a zombie apocalypse. Instead of a story about zombies, this book is an exploration of humanity and human nature. The interviews, although with different people at different times in different places of the world, come together to illustrate a compelling and cohesive narrative. I really enjoyed reading this and am impressed with how immersive and believable this fictional account of a zombie apocalypse feels. It's clear that Max Brooks put a significant amount of time and effort into making everything in these interviews feel like nonfiction. His care and attention to detail paid off. This is an excellent book that breaks out of the mold that novels typically conform to and I think it was all the better for it. My only gripe is that sometimes, Brooks went into a little bit too much detail, and I lost interest when characters were describing the nuances of different types of military technology. However, that is not a very significant part of the book and I think speaks more to my own subjective lack of strong interest in the mechanics of technology.

Some of the sections were better than others, but the overall concept of the book is fascinating to me. I'll probably want to find a paper or digital copy at some point, I think there may have been some character crossover that I missed because I can't hold onto names if I don't see them written down
