My only quibble was that the ending felt a little rushed but I loved everything else!
funny lighthearted medium-paced

4.5. Charming.

If you had told me I would be reading historical romance this time last year I would have laughed. But here I am, completely and utterly obsessed with Tessa Dare. If you enjoy historical settings, strong female characters and romance (and a tad of smut) then I highly recommend these books. Basically there are historical rom coms with a bit of cheese.

In Say Yes to the Marquess, we follow Clio, who has been engaged for eight years. Sick of waiting she has inherited her own castle and wants to start a brewery determined to call off her engagement and live her life to the fullest. Enter Rafe, her fiance's brother, determined to see Clio marry his brother (for his own agenda) so he offers to plan the wedding...

This book was fun, silly, cute and just an all-round good time. There were solid side characters, laugh out loud moments, and some "you go girl!" scenes. At this point, I am trash for anything Tessa Dare writes so I have to give this five stars out of pure enjoyment.

After an eight-year engagement to diplomat Piers Brandon, Clio Whitmore is tired of waiting for a marriage that will never happen and decides to end the engagement - with the help of Piers's brother, Rafe, who has authority to sign the papers. Say Yes to the Marquess follows Rafe's desperate, one-week attempt to convince Clio not to break it off, all while struggling to hold back the feelings he's had for her for years.

TW's: fatshaming and ableism.

PROS:
- The independence of the leads. This is my first Tessa Dare book, but I've heard this is a general trend within her catalog! It was so refreshing to read about two people who could prioritize their own wants and needs at the same time as a romance, especially given the time period this is written for. Clio's consistent desire to take charge of her own life, in all aspects, was lovely!
- Clio and Rafe's fleshed out backgrounds. This ties into the above, but the time and care taken with developing their shared and separate history, their individual backgrounds, the reasons for their insecurities, etc., was marvelous! In that sense, the book also felt really well paced, and no revelation of information felt like it came too late or too early.
- Clio's relationship with her sisters! This felt like such a holistic depiction of what it's like to have siblings, and how they can sometimes contribute to our trauma even if we love them! I liked seeing the different nuances in her relationships with Daphne versus Phoebe (and it was fun to see Rafe and Clio's mutual protectiveness over Phoebe, too).
- The smut, lol. What can I say? It was great. Not too corny, just the right amount of emotion, and really hot. I loved how Rafe's thing for fighting got tied into it, with "take that" being their means of expressing their love for each other. It was adorable.
- Rafe's emotional state. I'm not sure how to describe it, but he was a kind of all-over-the-place that was very endearing and easy to sympathize with. He was both desperate to be noble and do right by Clio and his brother, but he was also strikingly human and couldn't help but feel deeply about Clio as spending time with her resurrected his feelings. I really liked his parts and getting to see inside his head.

CONS:
- Slightly rushed ending? Considering Rafe's insecurities regarding his brother were such a huge factor in the central dilemma of the book, I was kind of surprised that he and Piers reconciled so quickly at the end. I really wanted to see more scenes with them, especially since we got to spend so much time observing the Whitmore sisters' relationship. It felt like their closure was rushed in order to get Rafe and Clio properly hitched, but I wouldn't have minded waiting.

FINAL RATING: 4.75

Clio has waited eight years to marry her Marquess, Piers, until she's finally had enough of waiting and wants to call off the wedding. Enter her would-be brother-in-law, Rafe, who is determined to see his brother married to Clio. And of course Rafe is actually in love with Clio, and of course Clio is actually in love with Rafe, and of course there would be drama.

Firstly, I was never a big of the in-love-with-my-brothers-betrothed trope. I just don't find it appealing. I didn't understand why Rafe wanted Clio to marry Piers, and when Piers finally came back towards the end of the novel, I found myself liking him more than Rafe even though his appearance felt extremely rushed.

Ultimately, I couldn't really connect to any of the characters. Although, there is one hot steamy scene in there that might be among the best ones I've ever read! So props to that.

oh, i really liked this! pulling off "i'm into my brother's gf/fiance" is a tricky thing to do without making one person in the party be unlikeable so i thought this handled it well by barely handling it at all lol which might be a problem for some people but i certainly didn't mind. i really enjoyed rafe and clio's interactions because you could feel that they just genuinely enjoyed being in each other's company! their interactions always felt comfortable and it truly did feel like these were two people that grew up together, who despite not interacting for years, still truly knew each other.
