A very poorly written attempt at a mystery/thriller novel.

I was so excited to read this book after seeing it displayed at Chapters for months and hearing great reviews of the author’s The Couple Next Door. I was severely disappointed.

The only word to describe the sentence structure and words used in this book would be “simple”. The conversations between the characters are all simple, their thoughts even more simple and quite juvenile (which makes them all unlikeable), and the author over explains everything as if the reader can’t think for themselves.

When you realize what is going on with the plot in this book, it’s nothing new. The ideas in the book were filled with very high school-esque drama. If you are reading this and it is not your first time reading a thriller (or maybe even if it is), you will be able to predict almost if not the entire plot before you’re even a third of the way through the story. Sped through to finish it, just so I could start something else.

If you’re looking for a real psychological thriller or mystery, try The Woman in the Window or any of Gillian Flynn’s novels.

Twists and turns until the very end

My second book by the author, and the second time where I could not put it down. I don't know if it's the storytelling or her writing, but I was enthralled and finished it in a day.

I’m conflicted about how to rate this one—and not because I didn’t like it (I really did until the ending), but rather, because the ending was SO incredibly problematic.

SPOILERS ABOUND.

Like, seriously? All of the women in this story are crazy, manipulative, malicious beyond belief. And I’m not buying it. And what’s worse, all of the men’s bad behavior is excusable because what the women did was so much worse. Sorrynotsorry, but infidelity, neglect, and abuse is reprehensible. “I didn’t have a choice!” You did. “I slept with her to PROTECT YOU!” I call bullshit, you were drunk and lonely. “She’s crazy and obsessed with me.” I’m so tired of the low key gaslighting and excusing the men’s poor behavior because “well, what she did was way worse.”

I was able to get on board with where we were going, even with Karen being a murderer (in self defense), but not with this. I’m still considering lowering my overall rating—TBD.

I read this 2 weeks ago and I already forget what it was about.
