Author Shari Lapena has a mystical way of making her readers believe one thing about her characters before completely pulling the rug out from under them in the last five pages of their story.
---
Karen Krupp has been living a simple life as a housewife in the suburbs with her husband, Tom. They have friends, but they mostly tend to keep to themselves. Everything has been happy - easy - uncomplicated.
Until Karen gets into a car accident, gets amnesia, and cannot remember why she was speeding away from a bad part of town that she would have never set foot in in the first place.
Tom is worried about their perfect little life bubble falling apart as he realizes that something is going on that he doesn't understand. He questions his wife - and his ability to trust his wife.
Is she who she says she is?
Karen's best friend, Brigid, lives in the same neighborhood as the Krupps. She's a good friend. She keeps tabs on them- it's easy, as her large living room window looks directly into their house from across the street.
But the last thing anyone expects is the truth that comes to the surface as Brigid steps forward with what she's witnessed, and what Karen comes to realize as her memory begins to return to her.
As far as the reader is concerned, nothing happens as it is originally perceived.
---
Lapena manages to solve the main element of her mysteries about half way through the novels that she writes. But that's not enough. Then the subplots begin unravelling, revealing to the reader that there is far more to this story than meets the eye. In fact, even once everything is solved and fixed and situated - there is still a secret truth hidden beneath it all … perhaps even multiple truths that remain to be discovered.

It's one of those books where you think you have it figured out but then there's twist after twist, honestly it felt like Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks to me without the romance.
