Dastardly beauties have enthralled me since Cruella de Vil, and Gretchen Lowell is no exception. She's everything you'd want out of a sick, cruel, obsessive, nasty, adorable psychopath. With a dazzling smile, to boot!
Cain does just enough revelation in the novel employing flashbacks to keep the reader wondering about the shared past between Gretchen and Archie, while at the same time holding interest in the present storyline of the serial killer. Several examples of a twisted mind emerge in the novel and will probably give you pause. But stick with it.
The end made me a little heartsick. And also made me want to get the second in the series.

If you are a mystery/crime drama fan--Heartsick is a great book. Fun, easy read, and interesting characters.
I checked out the audiobook from the library because of the ubiquitous presence of this book in my local bookstores. The story, although gruesome, caught my attention quickly and generally made time go quickly while exercising. I was really disappointing in the ending - the book just ENDED. Even though I figured at the time that there was a series in the works, I would have still liked to see some loose ends wrapped up.
This book is amazingly well written, but boy is it graphic. I still get goosebumps thinking about some of the stuff that lady did to the officer.

A little too much torture porn for my tastes, but definitely a compelling antihero mystery. I'll read more in the series.
Graphic: Torture, Murder
Moderate: Rape
This book was pretty intense--it's about a cop, the former head of a serial killer task force who was kidnapped and tortured by said serial killer before she turned herself in. Now he's back on the job, trying to find the killer of several teenage girls while an intrepid pink-haired girl reporter writes a story on him. Meanwhile, every Sunday he visits the woman who almost killed him, and he frequently flashes back to their time together. As things started to wrap up, I was having trouble suspending my disbelief, but when the final twist was revealed, I really had to appreciate Cain's storytelling. A/A-.
Somebody recommended this series to me so I bought the first one. Boy did it give me "Silence of the Lamb" vibes. I'm already into the second book. Looks like I will be reading them straight through and damn my TBR shelf for now. LOL. Gretchen Lowell is fucking creepy, and the relationship between her and Archie Sheridan is as fucked up as it gets. I love it.
A weird, messed up relationship between a female (!!) serial killer and the cop she kidnapped, tortured, and nearly killed (before she suddenly let him go and turned herself in).
There is a mystery going on- another killer on the loose killing girls- but the real story here is cop Archie Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell who is a sick psychopath. I absolutely loved this, and cannot wait to get my hands on #2. All the stars.
