If you enjoy Alex Kava's books, definitely check out Chelsea Cain. 'Heartsick' follows a hardcore female journalist and an emotionally wounded detective as they solve the murders of several teenage girls. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good crime.
Fantastic read! I really enjoyed the characters! There were some fun twists without being over the top or predictable.
Seriously twisted characters. Bizarre killer... this book had it all. Loved it... even though I'm still irked by some of the characters.
Good plot, interesting mystery, but the Stockholm syndrome storyline was not believable for me.
Just finished the first chapter. Whoa, I was not ready!
This chick is the kind of crazy that will be my yardstick for serial killers from now on (As in, "Is serial killer A anywhere near Gretchen Lowell? No. Well, then, s/he should probably take up gardening because s/he does not count."
I never want to be on the radar of a chick half as awful. (Hammerandnailshammerandnails OMG.)
.....
So, the twistedness continued...Two years ago, Archie Sheridan, the lead detective of the Beauty Killer Task force was kidnapped and tortured by Gretchen Lowell. For ten days, Gretchen Lowell, the Beauty Killer, made him want to die. At the end of the ten days, she turns herself in, leaving him with emotional and physical scars which remind him every day of that horror. Now, there is another serial killer killing the schoolgirls of Portland and Archie Sheridan has been asked to help catch another murderer.
What is great about this story is its original take on the serial killer story, which can get formulaic if you read widely. Gretchen Lowell is beautiful, malicious and manipulative. I hate her for damaging Archie Sheridan, but the story wouldn't be the same without her.

The first time I read this book (+ the whole series) was back in January of 2020. So it's been approximately a year since I first read this series. I was a bit hesitant to re-read this book, since a lot has happened in the past year and I was afraid I wouldn't like it anymore, but the fond memories from my first time reading these books are what pushed me to gather up my courage and give it a re-read (despite my fears) and to no ones real surprise (and to my own personal joy and relief) I am happy to say that I am still very much and absolutely in love with these characters! as well as the stories and plots that take place— all the twists and turns in this series, it is EPIC!
And if you are a fan of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter Series or a fan of the NBC (Bryan Fuller's) TV show 'Hannibal' then I would recommend you give this book a try (if not the whole series!)
I have a lot of good things to say about this book as well as the whole series but I want this to be a short review so— long story short; I adore these books and the characters in them as well as the writing style, even if it is full of heart wrenching and disturbing content

This is a book about serial killers, and it is one I read with horrified fascination. I can't say I loved it, just because of the subject matter, but it was well written. It is not for the faint of heart as there are some really graphic descriptions of gruesome things.
This seemed like another decent crime read until the last 3/4 of the book- it took a crazy twist I never would have imagined! I love that there is a female killer as a larger character in this book/series. This is unlike any other crime series I have read and I already grabbed the second one off my book shelf to dive into. I would recommended Chelsea Cain to every crime reader and I put her in my top 5 favorite authors!
