ARCHIE N-A ȘTIUT SIGUR CĂ EA E, până în chiar acel moment. Întâi simte o fierbințeală leneșă încolțindu-i pe șira spinării, privirea i se încețoșează, apoi știe că Gretchen Lowell e criminalul. Își dă seama că a fost drogat, însă prea târziu. Bâjbâie după pistol, însă mâinile-i sunt greoaie și nu reușește decât să și-l scoată din teaca prinsă la curea, cu un gest așa de straniu – îl ține de parcă i l-ar face cadou. Gretchen i-l ia zâmbind și-l sărută delicat pe frunte. Apoi îl caută în buzunarele hainei și-i ia mobilul, îl închide și-l lasă să cadă în geanta ei. Archie e aproape înțepenit de-acum, prăbușit într-un fotoliu de piele din biroul ei de acasă. Însă mintea lui rămâne prizoniera lucidității. Ea îngenunchează lângă el, așa cum ar face cineva lângă un copil, și-și pune buzele atât de aproape de ale lui că aproape se sărută. Archie își simte pulsul palpitând în gâtlej. Nu poate înghiți. Gretchen miroase a flori de liliac.
— E timpul să plecăm, dragule, îi șoptește.
Ea se ridică în picioare, iar el e luat pe sus, de cineva din spate, pe sub subsuori. Înaintea lui, un tip cu fața roșie, masiv, îl apucă de picioare și-l poartă așa până în garaj unde îl întind pe bancheta din spate a unui Voyager verde – autovehiculul pe care Archie și echipa lui l-au tot căutat, luni întregi –, iar Gretchen se așază deasupra lui. Atunci își dă seama că mai e cineva în dubă, că nu ea îl apucase din spate, dar n-are timp să se gândească prea mult la asta, căci acum ea îl încalecă peste tors, cu câte un genunchi strângându-l de fiecare parte a mijlocului. Nu-și mai poate mișca nici ochii, așa că ea îi povestește ce se-ntâmplă.
— Îți suflec mâneca de la mâna dreaptă. Caut vena.
Apoi Gretchen ridică o seringă hipodermică astfel încât el s-o vadă. Pregătire medicală, își zice. Optsprezece la sută dintre femeile care comit crime în serie sunt asistente medicale. El se holbează la plafonul dubei. Cenușiu metalic. Stai treaz, își zice. Memorează tot, fiecare detaliu; o să fie important. Își zice: Dacă supraviețuiesc.
— Te las să te odihnești puțin.
Gretchen zâmbește și își apropie fața frumoasă, cu trăsături regulate de-a lui, ca s-o vadă. E așa de aproape că părul ei blond îi atinge obrazul, însă el nu simte.
— O s-avem destul timp pentru distracție mai târziu.
El nu poate răspunde, nu mai poate nici măcar să clipească de-acum. Nu poate respira decât cu un horcăit ușor, prelung. N-o poate vedea băgându-i acul în braț, dar presupune că asta face, pentru că nu mult după aceea nu mai e decât întunericul.

Well-written serial-killer mystery/thriller. But not for the faint of heart-- there are a few graphic torture scenes. Disturbing and interesting, and set in Portland, OR.
Easy to read thriller that I gobbled down in a day, notable for the fact that (for once!) the creepy serial killer is a woman. The relationship between Gretchen Lowell and Archie Sheridan is a complicated one - he was the detective tracking her down, before she captured and tortured him, and even released from her clutches Stockholm Syndrome abounds. That central relationship is both the best and worst part of the book. Gretchen is so clever, and so manipulative, and so flat-out creepy that, much like Hannibal Lecter, every page she's on is compelling. But I end up wanting to smack Archie across the face (even though he'd probably enjoy it) and tell him to get his arse to therapy because I'm just not really buying this weird twisted love he seems to have for her.

Its been maybe a week since I finished the book so my opinion isn't as fresh as I would like it to be if that makes any sense. I didn't give it a 5 put I do believe it's a 4.5 rate. The relationship/connection between Archie and Gretchen makes the book more interesting. I love how in the end everyone is connected somehow, but it was bound to happen since it is a mystery book. I really enjoyed reading it, as soon as I started there wasn't a doubt that I was going to bored reading it, it sparked an interest instantly.

Во текот на целата книга се провлекува една чудна работа како за жртва на ваков ужасен настан: Арчи упорно продолжува да ја посетува Гречен во затвор еднаш неделно, велејќи дека тој е единствениот кој може да ја натера таа да им признае и открие каде ги скрила телата на нејзините останати жртви. Но дури и тој самиот ја знае вистината, дека не ја посетува својата мачителка затоа што бара признание и вистина, туку затоа што не може да се држи понастрана од неа.
Кога друг сериски убиец почнува да собира млади девојчиња, тинејџерки, од улиците на Портланд, Арчи мора да се прибере доволно за да води нова истрага за убиствата. Паралелно, една млада гладна новинарка, Сузан, почнува да работи на негов профил и пишува за истрагата и тука се раѓа новата смртоносна искра помеѓу Арчи, Сузан, новиот убиец, па дури и Гречен. Тие мораат да го фатат убиецот, па можеби дури и Арчи ќе успее да се ослободи од Гречен, еднаш и засекогаш.
Книгата не е лоша, особено како за деби книга на авторот, па би рекла дека ја оценувам со 3.5/5.

I do enjoy a good crime story and this book lived up to my expectation. I especially liked the beautiful-sexy, cunning psychopath in this story. The author created such a fine character with Gretchen Lowell. It was very interesting for me to find a female antagonist, a successful one at that, and for her to be able to abduct and torture the leader of a task force? Talk about femme fatale!
Others might not enjoy this book but it was definitely a mind boggling read (in a good way). I haven't read the second book, but I do hope it's as good as this one or hopefully even better.

While I didn't care for her Nancy Drew parody, this mystery really drew me in.
I was excited to read this book. A serial-killer novel by a Portland author -- cool! Sadly, it wasn't. These books (there are at least two) are not even slightly believable. The killer (Gretchen) manages feats of strength and speed that rival Superman. Even if you buy the Stockholm Syndrome relationship between her and Archie (the cop) -- I didn't -- the impossible things she does had me grinding my teeth.
