This book is stunning and certainly a new favourite. Few writers can render such a vivid portrait of a dying man who is now long dead, nor can they so beautifully weave a tapestry of prose that just aches with every word. Yourcenar presents both the young Hadrian, full of a sense of immortality and infinity, standing on the shoulders of a short and intimate history, and a Hadrian crushed by the weight of the future.
