I have never read a more relatable character. I think any woman who reads this could relate to Xiomara. The best books are the ones that tug at your heart and make you feel what the character is feeling. I don't typically read poetry or books written in poetry but I really loved this book. I can't wait to read more by this author.

absolutely incredible. i don’t really vibe with ya contemporary anymore but acevedo’s writing is so beautiful that this coming-of-age story left an impact

I haven’t read many books in verse, but this is the best I have ever read. The mix between basic narrative poems that just move the plot along and deeper poems that made you think was well balanced and appropriately timed. Xiomara’s voice was very unique, and her story entertained me throughout. The ending even made me tear up! This book was such a quick read because it is written in verse, I was able to finish it in about 4 hours, but it packs so much into it that it immerses you in the story and you hardly notice it is flying by.

An absolutely beautiful book. I always appreciate books or music that can so accurately tap into the emotion of teen life - when our emotions were the most powerful (before the repetition of heartbreak, disappointment and life in general blunted all those feelings). If they can tap into that and make you also feel those emotions again, then it's a quality piece of work. This book does that 100%. The way she describes her friendships, educational experiences, budding romantic life, physical/emotional abuse at home, supporting a sibling with his own personal struggles and self realizations, navigating American life as a Dominican woman from a devotely Catholic home, and realizing the realities of patriarchy as a young woman, and the discovery of her outlet for it all through poetry, and how powerful it was for her as an individual was all just excellent. I listened to this book via Kindle while working out the last few mornings, but it's so good I'll purchase a hard copy for my library now too.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook version of The Poet X! This book tells it's story through poetry and it's beautiful poems are meant to be heard aloud with the cadence of the reader's voice and not just in the quiet of your mind. I haven't read much poetry before and I've never read a novel in poetry format but after listening to The Poet X I can't wait to discover more of this genre. The story is told through the poetry of Xiomara, the book's protagonist and budding poet. Her poems deal with the pain and struggles that come from being different and believing different than one's parents. Although Xiomara's story is her own, it is also a story that is universal at it's heart. A must read or better yet, listen.
