A little mystery that begins with a lot of promise that ends up a bit of a mess by the end; I thought it didn't fully embrace any of the side roads it sets up for itself - it's not quite a travelogue, not quite a love story, not quite a study in personalities, etc. Additionally, I didn't think the author played quite fair when revealing the solution to any of the three criminal enterprises - and I wouldn't mind so much if the other aspects of the novel were outstanding - it all ultimately adds up to a solid "It was okay, I guess" experience.

I received an ecopy from the publishers and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the plot but he seemed to have changed his writing style which I didn't like.

This is my second Bude. I wasn't a fan of the first one I read (The Cornish Coast Murder), and I wasn't a huge fan of this one either. Too much expository writing (as in things like "little did he know that this small delay would lead to dastardly consequences!"), characters were barely likeable, the murder didn't even occur until 3/4 of the way in. The scene-setting in the south of France was pleasant though, and there were a couple of good bits of sleuthing that I enjoyed very much. The end was all right, though it did leave one character flapping in the wind. There is a romantic dimension that added to rather than detracted from the book's enjoyment.

A murder mystery with some twists, turns and red herrings! The murder does not occur until you are well into the novel...

Still a very lovely read during some very strange time.
