I rethought the reasons why I gave this book 5 stars and the first thing I would say is the writing style. it's flowery, dripping with honey, blown by spring breeze and all that, so yes, that's reason number one. But aside of his writing style, the overall plot is intriguing. The more you read it, the deeper you're hooked into what goes on in Dorian's life—and in his head too, honestly. but Lord Henry, in everything he says is so provoking despite how corrupt, how wrong it sounds that every time he speaks I have the urge to tell him to shut up, but also to go on with whatever messed up ideas he has in mind. The lack of action in classics might not be for everyone, but seeing them gather in the salon, holding a ball, dinner, tea time, going to plays, staying over at an acquaintance's house for months makes me think.. how fun that they don't have to work their asses of everyday to earn all that! And hey, it's always amusing watching characters get corrupted! I was always excited to see what else had gone wretched in Dorian's painting.

An absolute masterpiece - not only does Wilde construct a story which at once is morally powerful and subtly erotic (in both its explicit and allegorical fashions) in its passionate excess (through which he suitably caricaturises Victorian society), he does so with flowing, rich prose which is at once as bewitching as an acclaimed painting (not of Dorian Gray but more of like... The Mona Lisa) and as astonishing as the climactic soliloquy of a dramatic hero, marked for doom. All the emotions of Dorian are perfectly palpable - especially the moments where he arguably doesn't demonstrate any - and his desperation which bookends the plot adds a poetic touch to this already complex novel. A must-read :D

good book, a lot about rich people. i wonder how they live without working? other than that - interesting analysis of people’s obsession with beauty and youth. i think i just don’t care that much for the evil/ugly/age conflation.

Zo gestoord. Zo goed. Lord henry’s opmerkingen waren zo geniaal en de laatste paar hoofdstukken vanaf basil’s moord tot het einde waren zo goed en perfect
