this book was an amazing insight and representation into the Deaf community. it was a beautiful story of a girl struggling to find her place and identify herself, and i learnt a lot along the way as well!!

thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the chance to read an advanced readers copy :)

Amazing

I truly enjoyed this book, I loved how Anna used italic font to identify when a character was signing. That made the transition back and forth a lot easier to keep up with. As the books main character is a HoH teenage girl, it obviously aligns more with deaf girls. But anyone deaf, or even any teenagers, have common situations, feelings, worries, and expectations from this book they could relate to. I would recommend this book to many!

so so cute…y did i never go to summer camp

I loved this book! It's sweet, wholesome, and both an interesting and honest look into the complexities of being deaf/Deaf/HoH. Having a deaf son, it was a breath of fresh air to see it honestly portrayed, with nuance but without judgment for the different paths people take. That aside, though, it's a great summer romance story that all can enjoy!

DNF at 60%.

I had really high hopes for this book, but unfortunately I couldn’t connect with it. It read very juvenile and maybe it’s just that I’m not into YAs anymore, but I felt like some of the characters were acting like children. The romance aspect of this book and is what kept me going, but it’s not enough to hold my interest. I actually really liked Lilah learning ASL and navigating camp life, and I think that for the right audience, this book could really be something wonderful. I just couldn’t stick to it.

4,5 ⭐️ thats so good, szkoda że w polsce dopiero teraz się pojawiła na rynku

4.5, this was great

I think Give Me a Sign is providing really fresh representation in the YA space and I had so much fun reading it!

It follows Lilah, who struggles with her deafness, specifically with feeling Deaf "enough". She can pass as hearing with her hearing aids in, between lip-reading and just fumbling through anything she doesn't hear, and therefore she's never really immersed herself in ASL, especially as her parents are hearing. She has a younger brother who is also Deaf, whose hearing is deteriorating at an even quicker rate than Lilah's.

So Lilah decides to get a job as a counselor at the camp for children with disabilities that she went to as a kid. A lot of the campers are Deaf, while some are blind. She gets the job and goes off to spend the summer at camp.

She meets people who have no hearing, not even with hearing aids, and she meets people who do use hearing aids, and just all kinds of folks who fall under the umbrella of being Deaf. Being so surrounded by people like her really helps Lilah perk up a lot. She learns more advanced ASL at a pretty good rate, goes longer and longer without wearing her hearing aid, and even starts up a romance with Isaac, a Deaf counselor who doesn't have any hearing.

She also, as a counselor, is responsible for a handful of Deaf children, and I think that being the authority figure really heals her inner child and shows her the correct way to respond to children who are struggling with their deafness. She has one camper whose father kind of looks down on signing, so her camper does too, and the way she slows gets that camper to open up to signing is really sweet.

It's also not all gravy, because there are some stressful moments, mostly with people outside the camp, but also at camp. A counselor who is hearing and is using her summer as ASL practice, especially as fodder for her YouTube channel, and she isn't the most accurate, which is a source of stress for some other counselors. The camp is also pretty obviously low on money, and is in danger of closing, so potential investors are being marched through the camp every so often. The lifeguards are hot British guys and Isaac thinks Lilah likes them so that's relationship drama LMAO.

Lilah's brother also comes to camp for a month and they're able to have discussions about his learning ASL, his potential cochlear implant surgery, and just stuff like that that they never considered before.

I just love the inclusivity of this story and the emphasis it puts on the importance of community. Lilah becomes so much more confident, not only in her ASL and with her new Deaf friends, but also gains the courage to advocate for herself with the hearing people in her life that may have never maliciously refused to accommodate her, but never took the time to consider ways that they could make life easier for her. I think it's a super great debut and will be very excited to read more from the author.

4.5 Stars.

Loved the representation of the deaf community in this book!

This is a sweet YA novel that follows Lilah's journey trying to find her place - she's too deaf to feel included in the listening world, but feels not deaf enough to be truly part of the deaf community. Ms. Sortino gives such insight into Lilah's feelings and her struggles to fit in in both situations.

When Lilah becomes a camp counselor at a summer camp for the deaf and blind, it gives her the opportunity to really embrace what it means to be deaf and explore a side of herself that she doesn't get at home and at school.

I ended up listening to this one and I really enjoyed it. I was immersed in Lilah's story and felt her struggles and triumphs throughout.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers of this book for the e-arc copy.

Give Me A Sign touches on finding yourself, finding where you feel most comfortable and showed a lot of what the deaf culture consists of. It was truly eye opening and made me more aware of things that I hadn’t known about prior. I’m so happy I was able to read this, experience the camp with all of the characters and just see their outlooks on everything. Experiencing, how they were able to breakthrough certain obstacles that may have been hard or scary was lovely!

I will say, some parts did fall a bit short and made me unable to stay interested , but overall it was such a great read and I hope many people will read it. 4/5 ⭐️

This book is so well written. It’s also written by a deaf author so that’s even better!!! It’s kinda like a love story but at the same time it’s like educational.
