thank you Penguin Teen for the ARC!

So cute :)

Loved the audiobook and how they included how it sounds like for partially deaf people hear. If you read this then read the author’s note as well.

Been on a YA binge and this one gets the first 5-star review simply for being equally insightful, heartwarming, and inspirational.

This YA debut follows Lilah, our main character, who is having a crisis being stuck in the middle between deaf enough or hearing enough. Good thing she has something to look forward to every summer, Camp Gray Wolf that is a summer camp for deaf and pther dosabled kids. And this year, Lilah is set to be a junior counselor after years of being an attendee.

This is not my first time reading a book that featurrs characters with deafness but I admit that this one gave a lot of new insights about the deaf community and their struggle that I know happens in the real world.

The story may revolve during summer camp at Gray Wolf and majority of the book is told on a cheery note but there are scenes that highlighted ableism that Lilah and her friends encounter outside of camp. This is surely happening in the rral world knowing how unforgiving humans are in reality.

The romance is also commendable, I was waiting what will happen in the third act - will it be cheesy or forced? Good thing yhe author go with the realistic route which complimented the overall story.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable read but please check for content warnings before diving in. I also recommend listening to an audiobook since I enjoyed it with an audio accompaniment while reading.

5stars.

Have you ever read a book and thought “ok I just read a book that really matters, it’s really important that it was written and that I read it”. That’s what Give Me.a Sign felt like. It’s a book that really matters.

This book follows Lilah who is 17 and hard of hearing (HOH). She ends up being a counselor at Camp Gray Wolf, a camp for those that are deaf or blind. She navigates summer camp, romance, and figuring out for her what being part of the Deaf community means.

This book is sweet and fun and really shows that REPRESENTATION MATTERS. It also tackles thoughts and questions of ableism in a palatable way for teens.

A summer camp romance that showcases the many nuances of the deaf community.
I found it revealing and insightful.

The second half came together as a story whereas the start felt quite flat. This makes sense as we see Lilah really grow in confidence and in finding herself.

I wanted to like this one, but alas…I did not. Parts of it felt kinda preachy, and it seemed like every issue/thought that took place throughout the story was either there because nothing else was happening in the plot, or was a mountain made from a mole hill. It definitely tracks for a teenaged narrator, but after a while it just got ridiculous. The MC got on my nerves and the instalove was meh and lacked chemistry.

The one highlight of this story was being able to get some insight and perspective on the lives of those that are deaf or hard of hearing and/or blind.

Absolutely loved this book! My first time reading about deaf culture and although i am a hearing reader, i still felt Lilah’s frustrations when dealing with her hard of hearing issues within society and how she and her fellow counselors and campers navigated through everything. I loved how she was able to finally discover a sense of belonging after struggling to find her place between the deaf and hearing communities.
