Fascinating, but without the charm of it’s inevitable competitor, 1984. The characters weren’t super engaging, and I would’ve liked to spend more time with John to understand the systematic shifts experienced not only within “civilization” but outside of it as well.
I did not finish the revisited section. The government’s anxiety to take away freedoms is now so totally loud and unashamed that I didn’t feel it was necessary to get into the drive behind why a governing body behaves the way it does. I think his argument about overpopulation is interesting, but as populations increase and resource availability constricts, the government doesn’t seem to try and delegate (giving them the power Huxley describes as allowing for the descent into totalitarianism) they just take it. The dystopia we should fear seems to be more of a hybrid of 1984’s cruelty and Brave New World’s distractions.

People told me this book was going to change the way I viewed the world. That didn't happen for me. It's a great novel and it definitely deserves all of the praise that it gets for a variety of other reasons. The fact that it was written in the early 1930s and is so prophetic is extraordinarily admirable. It challenges what society does and how people think. But for me, personally, it didn't move me to re-evaluate the world. Perhaps that's because I already have a pretty clear definition of how I view the world; maybe if I would have read this when I was younger, I could say something different. In terms of the writing, I thought it was good but not great. I constantly felt like I was an outsider looking in to the characters rather than actually being in the novel, which frustrates me as a reader. The words didn't pull me in and make me feel like I was with the characters in their experiences.
At the end of the day, I'm going to remain in the 1984 camp. I think it's a better novel. Sorry, Brave New World fans.

I first read this book as a teenager. I saved my copy for a very long time and re-read it countless times. 2018 has just begun and I feel the need to buy myself a new copy and re-read one more time. That tells you how much I love this book!
