Eve finds murder in a studio that leads to a cult. This is a cult that has slavery, gay-bashing, and murder. J. D. Robb is a hard-hitting author. She's not afraid to take on the hard issues and bring them to light. Her character Eve Dallas is a strong woman that I can only admire.
I've been reading this series since the late 90s, and I've now read all 52 of them. I think if you spend that much time on a book series, your dedication is apparent. I loved that Faithless in Death deals with a cult. I'm always keen for cult books, and the cult within this book is creepy and crazy. There are a lot of moving pieces in this book, but Nora effortlessly ties them together. I haven't been super enthusiastic about the last 4 or so In Death books, but Faithless in Death reminded me of everything that is great about this series.
A bit of a slow start but once Eve and her crew grasp the extent of involvement by the misogynistic cult they are dealing with things get pretty wild.
Fifty two books later and JD Robb still knows how to showcase the dedication of the NYPSD at taking down entitled old white men and their belief systems. Reminded me of the last four years in US politics.

I must say I was sufficiently horrified by this book. Eve discovers a very suspect situation after a painter is murdered.
I couldn't put this book down. I needed to know what was gonna happen.
So great.

The case starts out with the murder of a young artist. A wealthy, engaged socialite discovered the body and made a frantic 911 call. She claims that she was just visiting a friend but Eve and even Peabody are seeing cracks in the story. As they dig, they begin to find that the case might not be as simple as they originally thought and that finding the killer might mean having to take down a giant cult at the same time.
I loved this return to normal. The last book was fine but there was too much trying to bring back every character ever. The "bad guys" were a little two-dimensional but not horribly so. It was more building off of stereotypes to create a shortcut so that each person could get a little more depth. We also got more about our favorite characters with Mavis and Leonardo taking a pretty big life step that is just so true to their family.
