The Whisper Man

3.95 AVERAGE

Easily giving this one a 4 star rating. I was pleased that I was wrong (not a "oh I bet it was [person]" wrong, but a "oh no, if it's [person] I will be SO annoyed," and then it wasn't that person sort of wrong) not just once, but twice!

There was one loose end I wished had been tied up, and one teensy little thing towards the end that I wish had been a little different, but otherwise a great book.

*4.5*
This book’s crowning glory is its characters and I loved the father-son core too damn much. They’re humane and well-developed and it’s worth reading the book just for them.
I wasn’t super into this at first but the plot builds well. North makes some smart choices in his writing, which has a great suspenseful flow.
Mild on the creep factor, but a flavorful taste.

Disliked the narrator

The Whisper Man was interesting because it spans multiple generations of people who are all connected to a single case. Pete is a cop who worked on the whisper man's case and was there for his arrest. Tom is a young father who moves to a new town with his son Jake after his wife's passing. The story revolves around someone who just like the whisper man talks to children in a whisper until he eventually kidnaps them. The original whisper man Frank Carter has been caught and imprisoned for the last 20 years, but there was always speculation that he had an accomplish. With this new kidnapping and murder this is now the only thing the cops can focus on. Pete is the only person Frank will talk to, and even then he speaks in circles not giving a full story right away. The are so many little details in the story from the perspective of the three generations of men involved in the case the cop, his son the writer, and the writers son Jake. Each one living with their own demons learning a better way to cope with life and even at a point with each other. Then on the flip side there Frank Carter 'the whisper man' and his son Francis who ends up continuing the legacy of his father as the whisper man with his own twist. There are a lot of little details leading you to the eventual peak at the end that sends everything tumbling. I quite enjoyed the storytelling and the difference perspectives of characters. Especially with Jake I feel like there could have been more things explained for him though. But then again he's a child and things aren't supposed to be cut and dry.

Spine chilling!! It’s always shocking to know the minds of some authors when they write a debut novel and this one is exceptional, readers will believe that the Whisper Man is out. Prepare to want to lock your doors and keep the lights on when you read this story. Check your children to be sure they are warm in their beds, just creepy! This book is well written and detailed so much that you feel like your there. The father-son dynamic abound in the book with both victim and the villain. A little feel from the movie Sixth Sense in the way the author has Jake seeing dead children. Interesting way the author wove the death moth into the book, makes the story that more creepy. And, that poem, it may just stick with me for a long time. There is a bit of despair to learn at the end, but I feel the author needed to put a closer on the har-life Pete dealt daily with. The author also cliff hangs the ending so as a reader you can imagine the ending. I know how I feel Francis’ ending came to be.
